The Director of Communications and Marketing will serve as a key member of the Institute's Senior Leadership Team and be responsible for communicating the organization's mission, vision and community work to various partners. Reporting to the executive director, they will be responsible for the development of a comprehensive communication strategy and contribute to the organization's strategic planning process. The director will develop a world-class communications plan, directly managing communications activities that promote, enhance and protect the organization's brand reputation. The director will be responsible for the creation, integration and implementation of a broad range of public relations activities relative to the strategic direction and positioning of the organization and its leadership. The director will be an ambassador for the organization and need to build and foster relationships with members of the news media. The director will also be responsible for the Institute's varied and integrated communications products and services including newsletters and other print publications; web, e-news and other online communications; media and public relations; and marketing. Daily Operations • Develop strategic marketing plans to support the institute's mission, goals and objectives. • Create and execute innovative marketing and public relations strategies, including both traditional and social media, to guide the institute's leadership in cultivating and enhancing relationships with the organization's key audiences. • Develop and implement an integrated marketing and communications plan to advance the institute's brand identity, broaden and increase the visibility of its programs/projects and build a strong public voice. • Partner with the Leadership Team to develop and implement an internal communications strategy across multiple channels. • Oversee all aspects of marketing and communications, including branding, advertising, special events, collateral materials, etc. • Manage the institute's brand across all internal departments to ensure continuity. • Actively manage, recruit and develop staff (e.g. graphic designers, digital marketing professionals and webmaster) as well as vendors to support and further extend the resource of the Marketing and Communications Department. • Build organizational capability by identifying skills needed in the Department and recruiting and developing staff in alignment with strategic priorities. • Build talent by establishing and communicating performance standards and developing staff to meet those standards. • Other duties as assigned. Required Skills • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, the Google Suite, and GIS • Ability to work independently, take initiative, prioritize duties and work closely with other programs/projects. • Be well organized, detail-oriented and have the ability to handle a variety of tasks simultaneously with a problem-solving approach. • Experience working effectively with clients from diverse background, with sensitivity to people from diverse communities. • Literacy and experience with computer office programs (MS Work, MS Excel, MS Outlook) • Excellent written, verbal and telephone skills Required Experience • Master's degree in marketing, communications, business or related field • Minimum of 10 years experience, holding progressively responsible positions in marketing and communications for agency, corporate, government and/or nonprofit organizations. • A strong communicator able to interface with a variety of audiences, both external and internal. • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills and the credibility and poise to present to a wide range of community partners. • Knowledge of AP style. • Proven success at developing and implementing digital marketing and social media strategies to enhance engagement and visibility. • Extensive experience developing, implementing and analyzing both traditional and social media metrics. • Innovative thinker, with a track record for translating strategic thinking into action plans and results. • Experience building, leading and mentoring a team of marketing and communications specialists. • Superior management skills, including the ability to advocate for and manage to budget priorities. • Presence and confidence to project credibility to staff, senior leaders, media, and community partners. • Self-reliant, problem solver and results oriented. • Demonstrated ability to multi-task, handle pressure and meet deadlines. • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (e.g. Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook) with solid understanding of key marketing and communication tools (e.g. Web Content Management Systems, email systems, Google Analytics and other web metrics, Adobe Creative Suite, among others). • A passion for Meharry Medical College's mission, vision and accomplishments.
