The American Lung Association has an excellent opportunity for a Development Intern in Southfield, MI. As an intern, you will support the Michigan staff in executing marketing, promotions, sales, and event management activities. This role offers valuable experience in communications, marketing, sales, public relations, and project management This is an unpaid internship position requiring a minimum time commitment of 7-14 hours per week (flexible schedule) and must be eligible for course credit or fulfill an internship graduation requirement. This position is for Spring/Summer 2025, with a completion date of August 15, 2025. PROJECTS This is a great opportunity for the intern to enhance their skills in organization, multi-tasking and communications. The intern can expect to develop confidence and marketable skills by engaging in or assisting with many of the following activities: Gain a basic understanding of the American Lung Association Become knowledgeable of mission, development, and communications efforts. Participate in staff meetings and learning opportunities. Development Planning & Management Provide comprehensive administrative support for communications and local special events, such as the LUNG FORCE Walk and Fight For Air Climb, to enhance event visibility and engagement. Contribute to the logistical planning of high-impact special events to gain hands-on experience in event coordination, including recruiting, training, and managing enthusiastic volunteers to ensure smooth execution. Engage in identifying and liaising with vendors and entertainment options to enhance event experiences. Help develop and distribute engaging media materials, including press releases, fact sheets, and promotional items, while creating compelling media pitches and story angles to boost event visibility. Assist in designing and producing promotional materials, including signage, circulars, mockups, and email campaigns, while managing online promotion efforts to maximize outreach. Participate in online outreach and promotion through social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter to connect with diverse audiences and generate excitement for upcoming events. Maintain and update tracking reports on public relations activities to monitor impact and effectiveness. Staff tables at health fairs and community events to promote the Lung Force and Fight For Air climb events, enhancing awareness and participation. Support the development of media lists, communication plans, and media calendars to streamline outreach efforts related to events. Collaborate in brainstorming and implementing innovative marketing strategies for promoting the Lung Force and Fight For Air climb events across Michigan. Plan and coordinate outreach events and presentations in various communities, including Detroit, Southfield, Troy, Downriver, and Ann Arbor. Assemble educational materials for presentations and tabling events to effectively communicate health messages. Contribute to the development and execution of lung health activities and educational events, including finding and securing subject matter experts. Secure venues for various ALA engagement and educational events, such as senior centers and other community spaces. LEARNING OUTCOMES: Develop Proficiency in Key Platforms: Gain hands-on experience with Blackbaud, Brandhub, and various social media platforms to understand their role in nonprofit communications and marketing. Understand Non-Profit Operations: Acquire insights into the structure of nonprofit organizations, including their mission, development strategies, and communications efforts, to appreciate how these elements drive organizational success. Receive Technical Training: Obtain technical skills through the use of constituent management software, desktop publishing tools, and office programs, enhancing your ability to manage and create impactful content. Apply Marketing and Advertising Techniques: Gain practical experience with current marketing and advertising strategies, including campaign development, digital marketing, and audience engagement. Experience Website and Social Media Management: Learn how to manage and optimize websites and execute social media campaigns to boost online presence and engagement. Enhance Team Collaboration Skills: Develop team building and collaboration skills by working closely with staff members on various projects and initiatives. Craft Communications for Events and Fundraising: Learn how to create effective communications for special events and peer-to-peer fundraising campaigns, including writing and designing promotional materials. Build and Nurture Relationships: Understand how to cultivate and maintain professional relationships with stakeholders, sponsors, and community members to support organizational goals. Excel in a Professional Office Environment: Gain experience in professional office settings, learn how to communicate effectively, manage tasks, and contribute to a positive workplace culture. QUALIFICATIONS: Educational Background: Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Non-Profit Management, Marketing, Communications, Business Administration, or a related field. College Credit: Eligible to receive college credit for the internship. Professional Traits: Enthusiastic, reliable, and motivated to develop a career in marketing, business administration, non-profit management, or a related field. Skills and Interests: Strong writing skills, meticulous attention to detail, and a genuine interest in the mission of the American Lung Association. Multitasking and Teamwork: Demonstrated ability to multitask, work effectively in a team environment, and a proactive attitude towards learning. Independent Work: Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Computer Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher. Physical Requirements: Capable of lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. of supplies. Office Availability: Available to work in the office at least one day a week.
