Position Summary DescriptionAs the Senior HVDC Engineer, you will use work experience, knowledge and industry accepted practices to approach a broad variety of assignments and related fields on the high voltage DC (HVDC) system. Additional training on the HVDC system will be provided as part of the qualification program. You will plan and complete work requiring engineering judgment in selection and substantial adaptationmodification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria. In this position you will work independently to perform most assignments but will coordinate work with operations' staff to facilitate project completion and assist in training of system operators. This position will develop, manage, and provide evidence for the NERC compliance program. Qualifications and Education RequirementsBachelor's degree in an Electrical Engineering or Power Systems Engineering. Alternative degrees in combination with specialized experience andor certifications may be considered.5+ years of experience working at a substation, power plant, or HVDC facilityA graduate degree in Electrical Engineering andor Management is considered a plusExperience with Hitachi Energy's MACH control and protection system is considered a major plusTechnical CompetenciesSkills:-Demonstrated experience with:Operations and maintenance of an HVDC converter stationtransmission projectManaging a diverse, cross-functional team in a challenging technical environmentAuditing procedures and risk managementDeveloping, implementing, and maintaining processes, procedures, and evidenceTechnical Report writing-Strong knowledge of:HVDC systems and equipment (specific knowledge of Hitachi Energy MACH controls is a plus)Familiarity with Power Electronics, HVDC systems, Protection and Control, SCADA, and associated equipment (FACTS knowledge is also considered a plus)NERC Standards and the programsevidence needed to ensure compliance with applicable requirementsApplicable industry standards such as IEC, IEEE and CIGRESoft CompetenciesSkills:-Effective verbalnonverbal, listening, and written communications-Proficient technical writing and presentation skills-Ability to:multitask and manage multiple priorities to meet multiple deadlinesdirect program work and lead cross-functional team efforts as necessaryinterpret data and produce informative reportsinitiate projects as requiredHold a valid US Driver's License-Be self-directed, originate new ideas, and able to present methods to othersEssential FunctionsAssist the HVDC O&M Manager to lead a team of operatortechnicians and to achieve the maximum possible availability of the HVDC project for commercial operationsTroubleshooting of faults and trips at the converter stationProvide technical training and training opportunities to the O&M staffProvide technical expertise and input to support wholistic project schedule, stake holder updates, and efforts related to project regulatory, public, or government affairsWork with the NERC Compliance Manager to develop, document, and comply with all applicable NERC standards requirementsPerforms other job-related duties as assignedPhysical RequirementsMust be able to follow established protective measures including wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE). Must have a valid driver's license and be able to maintain an acceptable motor vehicle report. Must be able to lift 50 pounds if needed.Working ConditionsSome travel and work outside of normal business hours.
