Job Description Coherent Aerospace & Defense, Emerging Products & Technologies Business Unit is seeking a mechanical engineer to contribute to the development of advanced laser systems for defense applications. Primary Duties & Responsibilities Lead Mechanical Designer: Works as a member of a cross-disciplinary team of systems engineers, optical engineers, FPGA engineers, and software engineers. Responsible for execution throughout all phases of the product design cycle including concept development, detail design, qualification, and transition to manufacturing. Leads and collaborates with cross-functional teams to support customer design requirements and acceptance. Responsible for troubleshooting and support of technical issues that could arise during the manufacture and test of prototype and deliverable product and for assessing root cause and generating corrective action plans as necessary. Serve as the primary customer interface for mechanical design on major government/aerospace programs. New Business Development: Participates in writing proposals and providing cost and schedule estimates in support of new business pursuits. Technical Expertise: Serves as one of the organization's subject matter experts with extensive knowledge and expertise in mechanical design. Extensive knowledge and expertise with extremely complex assignments that very few employees can master. Work is accomplished without considerable direction. Implements new products, processes, standards or operational plans that will have impact on the achievement of functional results. Education & Experience Minimum of 12 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 10 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 7 years' experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Skills Necessary applicable experience/skills in the following areas: Design, development, and basic analysis of electromechanical hardware and systems for military/avionics/space applications Product/factory support of DoD military electronics/avionics equipment Proficient with mechanical engineering design and development tools (SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM preferred) Mechanical design/packaging of multilayer circuit card assemblies Product prototype & test Knowledge of engineering development processes Solid understanding of design for assembly and integration in complex opto-mechanical devices including tolerance stack analysis Comfortable with "hands-on" laboratory work and use of instrumentation, equipment, processes, and hand tools Experience in preparing and maintaining drawings, procedures, work instructions, and Bill of Materials in an environment of complete document and configuration control Familiarity with MIL specs & standards, industry standards including ASTM, SAE, DOD, NASA Preparation and presentation of customer review presentations Experience leading teams of mechanical engineers and delegating objectives and tasks to achieve goals Must be able to obtain/maintain a US Government security clearance if one is required to perform the job responsibilities. Desired applicable experience in the following areas: Laser systems and opto-mechanical design experience, or relevant area of photonics/fiber optics/bulk optics in an industrial R&D environment Design for space/vacuum environments SolidWorks Simulation, ANSYS, or similar FEA software Design and analysis of materials such as ceramics, specialty metals (Invar), carbon fiber composites, and optical coatings Understanding of attachment methods for opto-mechanical systems; preparation and use of primers, epoxies, RTV, and elastomers Manufacturing, production, and sustainment of opto-mechanical systems and hardware Design for manufacturing (DFM) principles Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T Y14.5) Vibration isolation, dynamics, kinematics, laser beam delivery, motion analysis, and laser applications Working Conditions Primarily an engineering design and development function with office and laboratory working conditions.
