MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Contact school and site personnel regarding maintenance and repair needs; conduct customer needs assessments; determine project requirements, including scope, assembly sequences, and required methods and materials, according to blueprints, drawings, and written or verbal instructions. Convert blueprints into shop drawings to be followed in the construction and assembly of sheet metal products; develop and lay out patterns that use materials most efficiently; select gauges and types of sheet metal or non metallic material, according to product specifications; execute work assignments within the constraints of authorized expenditures and applicable District standards. Install assemblies, such as flashing, pipes, tubes, heating and air conditioning ducts, furnace casings, rain gutters, and down spouts, in supportive frameworks. Secure metal roof panels in place, interlock and fasten grooved panel edges; fasten roof panel edges and machine made molding to structures, nailing or welding pieces into place; drill and punch holes in metal, for screws, bolts, and rivets; fasten seams and joints together with welds, bolts, cement, rivets, solder, caulks, metal drive clips, and bonds in order to assemble components into products or to repair sheet metal items. Use a variety of power and hand tools such as shears, hammers, punches, and drills to fabricate or alter parts; shape metal material over anvils, blocks, or other forms; trim, file, grind, deburr, buff, and smooth surfaces, seams, and joints of assembled parts; remove hazardous materials identified in the course of sheet metal work, in compliance with local, state and Federal laws. Drive a district vehicle to transport tools, equipment, prefabricated parts and other materials necessary to assemble,install, repair and complete assigned projects. Inspect individual parts, assemblies, and installations for conformance to specifications and building codes, using measuring instruments such as calipers, scales, and micrometers. Maintain work order and timekeeping written records; input work order and timekeeping data into timekeeping system; keep records of the labor and materials on the work performed. Demonstrate a commitment to the Portland Public Schools Equity Initiative by developing a thorough knowledge and application of the district Racial Educational Equity Policy. Participate in staff development, in-services and trainings related to diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace and in K-12 education; model appropriate behaviors; develop, recommend and implement improvements to business and school practices and student achievement with awareness and understanding of their impact in a racially and culturally diverse community. Provide work direction, training and guidance to other workers to install, maintain, or repair sheet metal assemblies and fixtures, as assigned. Operate a personal computer and related software; operate trucks and other vehicles; maintain shop includingcleaning and organizing tools and shop equipment. Maintain a variety of records and reports related to assigned activities. Maintain work areas, shop area, equipment and tools in a safe, clean and orderly condition; perform routine maintenance, repairs and modifications to assigned equipment when necessary. Ability to braze and weld aluminum and stainless steel. Perform related duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: Standard methods, codes, materials, practices, tools, and equipment used in the sheet metal trade; basic tools and procedures used in other/related trades. Preventive maintenance programs and techniques related to designated trade. Safety practices necessary around tools and materials and for performing work with heavy physical requirements. Hazards and safety precautions associated with sheet metal work. Legal guidelines and compliance standards related to hazardous materials associated with the trade. Demonstrated ability to recognize characteristics of malfunctioning equipment and systems; the range of conditionsor problems that could cause various sheet metal equipment to malfunction; identify and correct specific problems causing equipment malfunction. Shop mathematics applicable to journey-level sheet metal trades. Record keeping techniques. Principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. Health and safety regulations for sheet metal work, environment, and related equipment. Office machines, shop technologies and a variety of computer software programs used in the trades. Oral and written communication skills. Ability to: Inspect equipment, structures, and materials to identify the cause of errors, problems or defects. Identify information by categorizing, estimating, recognizing differences or similarities, and detecting changes in circumstances or events. Use control mechanisms and/or direct physical activity to operate machines or processes as appropriate. Drive vehicles and mechanized equipment, such as trucks, forklifts, passenger vehicles, trailers and similar equipment. Develop specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish work. Provide documentation, detailed instructions, drawings, and specifications describing how devices, parts, equipment, or structures are to be fabricated, constructed, assembled, modified, maintained and used. Monitor and review information from materials, events, or the environment, to detect or assess problems. Keep up-to-date technically and apply new knowledge to your job. Use relevant information and individual judgment to determine whether events or processes comply with laws, regulations, or standards. Provide work direction, training, support and guidance to assist others in improving their knowledge or skills. Service, repair, adjust, and test equipment, machines, devices, moving parts used in the sheet metal trade. Develop constructive and cooperative working relationships. Provide information by telephone, in written form, e-mail, and in person. Interact and display professional conduct with those contacted in the course of work. Identify hazards and implement safety precautions associated with the work Handle hazardous materials associated with the job in accordance with established laws and policies. Meet quality standards for service and document and evaluate customer satisfaction. Work from ladders, scaffolds, aerial personnel lifts, boom trucks and roofs to install, maintain or repair sheet metal assemblies, equipment, and fixtures. Understand and execute oral and written instructions. Operate specialized tools, acetylene torches, electronic instruments and equipment used in performance of journey level sheet metal work. Use hand and power tools in the performance of sheet metal work. Read and apply information from diagrams, schematics and repair manuals. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Deliver a high-level of customer service to district stakeholders. Advocate, model, learn and implement Portland Public School's Racial Equity Initiative, Equity in Public Purchasing and Contracting and other board policies. Maintain routine records and reports. Work independently with little direction. Meet schedules and timelines. Experience: Equivalent to graduation from high school and five (5) years of journey-level experience in the installation,maintenance, and repair of building sheet metal systems and related equipment is required. Any other combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the candidate is likely to possess the skill, knowledge, ability and trait characteristics essential for this classification may be considered. LICENSES; CERTIFICATIONS; SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees in this classification are required to obtain and maintain, throughout the course of employment, certification of successful completion of a Class III Asbestos Abatement course meeting EPA requirements for training local education agency maintenance and custodial staff [40 CFR 763.92(a)(2)]. Positions in this classification require a valid State of Oregon or Washington driver's license. For the purpose of insurability and district liability, employees must meet and maintain the District's safe driving standard throughout thecourse of employment. Incumbents in this class will be required to wear protective clothing, gear and equipment as required by law.
