Job Title Principal Mechanical Design Engineer (Shelton, CT) Location(s) Shelton Responsibilities Key member of the project team in defining the system requirements, architecture, and engineering design of a new product with full understanding of how it benefits the customer. Must provide performance, effort, and cost estimates at multiple stages of the project. Own the development of the assigned subsystem. Tasks include work with multi-disciplinary team to ensure design meets requirements, performing design reviews for stakeholders, ensuring proper material selection, maintaining BOM structure, and meeting cost targets. Design, tolerance and ensure function of high precision mechanisms to micron level specifications. Work with external vendors and internal resources to develop working prototypes of new products and verify that these prototypes meet the system requirements. Assemble and test prototypes to gain input for design for manufacturing improvements. Identify root cause of issues and provide targeted solutions while weighing cost, complexity, and implementation. Work with manufacturing and suppliers to bring product designs from the engineering prototype phase to products release. Research new processes and technologies as a method of developing more cost effective and higher functioning instruments. Address quality or value engineering issues on current shipping products. Basic Qualifications B.S. Mechanical Engineering degree. Minimum of 10+ years of design experience in new product development spanning concept, design, and production phases. High level of drive to attain results, complete tasks, and think toward next steps. Self-initiates courses of action and self corrects as necessary to obtain desired timeline and results. Good hands-on skills with an understanding of hand tools, small power tools, measurement devices. Highly skilled with SolidWorks or similar software for parametric designs in 3D modeling and 2D drawings. A good grasp of the implementation of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing Experience in tolerance analysis of assemblies and components. Demonstrated knowledge of sheet metal fabrication, die casting, plastic injection molding, and machining processes. Effective communication skills for design reviews, reports, emails, system requirements, etc. Cooperative attitude for interfacing with a multi-discipline, multi-site project team. Preferred Characteristics Experience with thermal and structural analysis capabilities desired. Experience with optics, spectroscopy, or microscope systems a significant plus. Advanced engineering degree a plus. Willingness to travel on occasion. The annual compensation range for this full-time position is $115,000 to $140,000. The final base pay offered to the successful candidate will be determined by factors including internal equity, work location, as well as individual qualifications, such as job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
