The position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek. Job Type Unclassified Department County Attorney About the Position As a Paralegal within the Government Advice and Elected Officials Practice Group of the Civil Services Division, your primary focus involves assisting and working with attorneys assigned to the dozens of County clients/departments providing legal advice and representation on issues ranging from statutory authority, procurement, open meeting law, and public records law, among many other legal issues. There are also opportunities to assist other Division attorneys, as assigned. About the Civil Services Division The Civil Services Division of the Maricopa County Attorney's Office serves as a law firm that provides legal representation and advice to the Maricopa County government, including its elected officials, departments, and employees. Our work involves defending legal actions, lawsuits, and claims brought against County entities, including Section 1983, tort, election, and tax litigation. We also provide legal advice to County officials on a variety of public law topics. Additionally, we process public records requests for the Maricopa County Attorney. Our division has four practice groups: Litigation; Government Advice & Elected Officials; Human Resources, Behavioral Health, & Probate Group; and Appeals, Election Law, Public Records, & Tax. With this opening, the Civil Services Division is looking to add one Paralegal to its Government Advice and Elected Officials Practice Group. This defined retirement benefit requires a 12.27% monthly contribution rate and includes a 100% employer match on Day 1 Extensive wellness program with $60 monthly medical premium discounts Employee discounts for goods and services Learn more at Work With Us | Maricopa County, AZ We Require An associate degree in paralegal studies or legal assistance Two years of experience as a paralegal, legal assistant, or related work OR Associates in an unrelated field + Certificate in Paralegal Studies - 2 years of experience needed Bachelor's or higher in paralegal studies, legal assistance, or legal studies - no experience needed Bachelor's or higher in an unrelated field + an Associate or Certification in paralegal studies - no experience needed Job Contributions Produce well-written initial drafts of pleadings, motions, briefs, affidavits, memos, discovery requests, and responses, reports, and correspondence, as assigned Utilize computerized research tools Assist attorneys with client communications, witness interviews, depositions, civil court rules and proceedings, and trial/hearing preparation, including preparation of witness summaries, organization of exhibits, securing evidence and documentation, deposition abstracts, subpoenas, and witness notifications Assist attorneys in compiling annotations, indexes, and provisions of statutes, cases, and administrative decisions File pleadings, motions, etc., with courts and tribunals as needed Review, organize, index, and Bates stamps pertinent documents for disclosure/discovery and for use in courts and tribunals Analyze, organize, review, and verify records and other documents obtained through the discovery process Assist in updating and maintaining the database/case management system Organize and maintain documents in paper and/or electronic filing system Perform legal and factual research Review and edit documents for accuracy Working Conditions Office setting in high volume, fast-paced environment with frequent stressful situations May require long periods of sitting while completing paperwork, standing and moving about while performing duties Ability to travel to and from various county locations for court appearances, meetings, and training, using personal or county-owned vehicles Ability to move up to 20 pounds floor to waist and pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds a distance of up to 100 feet Upon completion of a successful 6-month period after hire, employees are eligible to telework up to 16 hours per week with supervisor approval.
