JOB SUMMARY: The City of Mountain Brook is seeking an experienced Turfgrass Supervisor to be responsible for planning, directing, and overseeing a crew of employees engaged in turf management, care, and maintenance. They work on playing fields, practice areas, parks, and other high-profile locations. Key responsibilities include developing project deadlines, resolving conflicts, coordinating work, and interpreting policies. Turfgrass Supervisors exercise judgment in adapting guidelines to specific cases and perform their duties primarily outdoors using tools like power saws, nail guns, drills, lawn mowers, and weed eaters. To learn more about the City of Mountain Brook, please visit Minimum Requirements To be considered for employment in this position, a candidate must possess at least one the following options: Option A: Driver's license. Alabama Certified Pesticide Applicator License with Ornamental and Turf Pest Control certification. Experience with establishing and maintaining different turf types. Experience with diagnosing and treating weed, insect and disease problems affecting turf. Experience with identifying and correcting poor soil conditions. Option B: Driver's license. Alabama Certified Pesticide Applicator License with Ornamental and Turf Pest Control certification. Possession of a Bachelor degree in agronomy, turfgrass management, horticulture, or related field. Preferred Qualifications: Preferred qualifications are experiences, education, and/or other job-related qualifications considered to be highly desirable by Merit System agencies. The preferred qualifications may be used by the hiring agency to identify applicants to invite to participate in subsequent selection processes. Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Bachelor degree in agronomy, turfgrass management, horticulture, or related field. Supervisory experience. Experience operating and maintaining turf irrigation systems. Job Duties: Typical job duties include, but are not necessarily limited to: Prepares bid specification and purchases supplies by determining quantity required, writing bid specifications, reviewing bid forms, and calling vendors to get price quotes in order to ensure optimum usage of budget. Maintains the facilities by inspecting and repairing equipment, communicating with coaches, replacing bulbs, and picking up trash to ensure the areas are operational for scheduled activities. Maintains established turfs by planning mowing schedule, monitoring irrigation, aerating turfs, inspecting for problems, and applying chemicals in order to keep the quality of the fields useable for the activities and acceptable for users. Maintains lawn mowers and equipment (e.g., changing oil) by reading manufacturers manual. Acts as a lead worker of peer or support staff by assigning and reviewing work tasks, facilitating training, and providing feedback using policies, procedures, tools, and directives from management in order to ensure tasks are completed in accordance with established requirements. Establishes turfs by spreading seeds, applying fertilizers, and irrigating the land in order to create playing fields that are suitable for use and meets standards of the users. Maintains a pesticide license in order to treat turf for disease.
