Assoc Chemist Description Associate Chemist Job Summary : Conduct chemical analysis using state of the art laboratory tools. Provide technical support for all wet chemistry processes at Lycoming including electroplating, cleaning, stripping, and supplemental treatments. Perform spectrometric chemical analysis on purchased parts, experimental parts, field returns, and unknown materials. Work cross functionally with Engineering, Quality, Product Support, Manufacturing and Procurement to provide chemistry guidance and recommend improvements. Evaluate alternative or additional analytical equipment and methods. Responsibilities to Include : Monitor electroplating, stripping, and cleaning solutions by performing weekly and monthly analyses to maintain proper chemistry. Troubleshoot chemical process issues for production. Compile data and maintain records for chemistry sampling and analysis methods. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis of polymers, fuels, oils and other substances.Maintain a custom library of spectra for use in identifying unknown materials. Develop expertise with Optical Emission Spectrometer (OES) for analyzing metallic parts.Develop Type Standardizations for commonly used alloys. Develop expertise with portable Laser Induced Breakdown Spectrometer (LIBS), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectrometer (EDS), for analysis of a wide range of materials and substances. Perform salt-spray corrosion testing on metallic samples and alternative coatings. Research and development of new coating processes. Communicate with engineers, internal customers, and outside testing labs regarding chemistry sampling and testing. Drive continuous improvements in lab equipment, capabilities, and procedures. Cross-train on materials engineering lab work Qualifications Qualifications: Education: B.S./B.A. in Chemistry Desire to perform "hands-on" work, a strong work ethic, and a desire to learn. Capable of working to a set of defined requirements (procedures, drawings, specifications). Knowledge of polymer science, fuels and oils, or organic chemistry is a plus.
