Job Description:Position Title: Nurse PractitionerStudent Health CenterReports To: Director Student Health Center Position Description and SummaryThe staff nurse practitioner will function as a clinician in the Student Health Center (SHC). This is a full time, nine-month position (September-May). The nurse practitioner will provide direct patient health care to Fairfield University students. Primary responsibilities include management of common illnesses and injuries. The SHC is licensed as an Outpatient Clinic by the CT Department of Public Health. The SHC is also accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care. The nurse practitioner will work with the SHC team and Director to maintain compliance with all licensure and accreditation standards. Required QualificationsEDUCATION: Master of Science in Nursing or DNP degreeBLS CPR certification is requiredLICENSURE/ACCREDITATION: CT Registered Nurse licenseCT Advanced Practice Nurse licenseANCC accreditation (or equivalent) as a nurse practitionerEXPERIENCE:Minimum of 3-5 years of clinical experience in the nurse practitioner role (clinical experience working with adolescents/young adults preferred).Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills are requiredUnderstanding and appreciation of the Jesuit mission and values within higher educationUnusual Work Conditions: Access to confidential medical informationAbility to function during peak periods of demand for health careAbility to function when a student presents to the SHC with an emergent medical condition (requiring EMS transport to hospital Emergency Department)Adherence to SHC infection control and prevention protocols is required to decrease risk of occupational exposure to communicable diseases (risk is mitigated, but not eliminated)Weekend hours required (rotating schedule)Essential Duties and Responsibilities:1. Provide primary care to Fairfield University students in the Student Health Center (SHC) in collaboration with the SHC Physician as authorized by the CT Nurse Practice Act and in a manner consistent with Fairfield University Mission and Identity. This involves: conducting physical assessments; ordering diagnostic testing, as appropriate, which may include laboratory testing or certain diagnostic imaging tests; implementing treatment plans which may include ordering and dispensing prescription medication, specialty referrals and patient . Provide health education outreach in various forms (e.g. dorm talks, health literature development, mentoring student groups with a health education focus).3. Assist the SHC Director and the CT Department of Health in the identification and management of infectious disease outbreaks in the University community.4. Document all clinical encounters in the student's medical record in accordance with the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974. 5. Function as a patient advocate as . Assist the SHC Director with the development and maintenance of SHC Clinical Policies and Procedures. 7. Assist the SHC Director with the implementation and maintenance of a comprehensive Quality Assurance program. 8. Support the SHC RN staff and the SHC Operations Assistant as needed. 9. Participate in the professional growth and development of the department. This involves:a. Monitoring developments in health care through membership in professional associations, attendance at workshops and seminars, and in the reading of professional literatureb. Promoting an image of efficiency and courtesy throughout the University communityc. Attending departmental staff meetings as requestedd. Recommending improvements in policies and procedures that may lead to more effective and comprehensive health care for the studentse. Supporting the SHC/University mission10. Perform other health care and administrative functions or duties as . Promote safe and secure working conditions. This involves:a. Promoting the proper utilization of equipment and materialsb. Notifying the SHC Director immediately of any unsafe working conditionsc. Adhering to Infection Control Policies and Procedures12. Maintaining required clinical competencies. 13. Participates in SHC committee work as assigned by the SHC Director; Examples include: a. The SHC Risk Management Committee which is charged with implementing and maintaining a program of risk management designed to protect the life and welfare of the SHC's patients and employees.b. The SHC Quality Improvement Committee which is charged with setting the quality improvement priorities and standards, as well as the oversight, coordination and development of quality improvement activities.FUNCTIONS REQUIRING SPECIAL PRIVILEGING:Performing vaginal wet mountsRequired Hours: The SHC is open seven days/week during the academic year. Staff nurse practitioners rotate through the weekend shifts. The SHC work week equals 37.5 hours per week.
