The Hastings Fire and EMS Department is a dual-role department, it delivers both fire services as well as pre-hospital emergency medical service care through its Advance Life Support paramedic ambulance service. The Department consists of a Fire Chief, Assistant Fire Chief, Fire Marshal, Fire Inspector, Fire Captains, full-time firefighter/paramedics, paid on-call firefighter/EMTs, and administrative support. The Hastings Fire Department's service area is one of the largest in the Twin Cities at 150 square miles. In this department, you will be able to experience a wide variety of calls for service. Annual wages (for 2025) are $77,321.40 - $97,683.30. Lateral applicants are encouraged to apply, consideration of experience in salary placement. Paramedic Premium: Those Firefighters who have received/maintained their Paramedic Certification earn an additional $513.89 per month. Overtime is not mandatory. Performs firefighting activities including fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose, and performing fire suppression, containment, ventilation, and extinguishment risks. Perform Basic (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) procedures. Directs and supervises fire personnel at scenes of emergencies and during cleanup operations when equipment and apparatus are being decontaminated and put back in service. Safely operates all Fire Apparatus vehicles, Emergency Medical Service vehicles, and specialty vehicles of the Hastings Fire Department including but not limited to Aerial Towers, Class A Pumpers, Grass Fire Rigs, Tankers, Rescue Boats, Rescue Snowmobile, Rescue Trucks in accordance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) #1001 and OSHA Standards as may be amended; Hazardous Materials Operations - Performs duties in accordance with NFPA #472 and OSHA Standards (as may be amended) for hazardous materials incidents. Public Education - conducts public education on fire prevention, emergency medical techniques, fire suppression activities, personnel safety, and other related areas as assigned. Training Instruction - Responsible for developing and conducting Fire and EMS training to department personnel regularly to assure compliance with applicable agencies, including but not limited to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Federal and State Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), National Registry of Emergency Technicians at the Basic and Paramedic levels. Instructors are required to maintain continuous self-development to assure proper training skills, techniques, and information. Apparatus and Equipment Maintenance - Performs regular performance checks on all firefighting, EMS equipment, and vehicles and documents and coordinates to ensure needed repairs are made in a timely manner. Maintain records of operational checks and repairs in accordance with OSHA, NFPA, and DOT standards. Repair of equipment as needed or directed. Building and Grounds Maintenance - Performs routine maintenance of grounds and building equipment and structural contents. Coordinates with appropriate building maintenance personnel in accordance with OSHA standards. May serve as Fire Ground Officer when first on the scene (until relieved) to initiate the Incident Management System, including but not limited to Size Up, Scene Safety, Personnel Accountability, Apparatus Placement, Suppression, Rescue Logistics, and EMS. Perform other duties as required, assigned, or apparent. Regular attendance is required. Typical Qualifications **Current Firefighter/EMTs or Certified Paramedics will be considered** No prior firefighting experience is necessary for fully qualified Paramedics Must be willing to obtain Paramedic or Fire certifications. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent; Possess minimum certification equal to the State of Minnesota's equivalent for: Firefighter II Hazardous Materials Operations Emergency Medical Technician Possess a National Registry Emergency Medical Technician Meet NFPA medical and physical standards. Valid driver's license. Microsoft program and computer functions as well as related equipment. Minnesota Licensed Firefighter or ability to obtain a Minnesota Firefighter License. Preferred Qualifications Certified Paramedic Associate's degree in a fire-related area. Knowledge of and familiarity with Fire and Building Codes.
