13 weeks 36 hrs/wk 12hr shifts, Nights Weekend and holiday rotation. Job Title: Polysomnographic Technologist II Department/Subsidiary: Neurodiagnostic Lab JOB SUMMARY The Polysomnographic Technician performs all types of sleep disorder testing, including set-up and performance of nocturnal polysomnograms (PSGs). Comfortable with training of sleep interns as needed. ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY A. Reports to: Neurodiagnostic Supervisor B. Supervises: none C. Key Working Relationships: Sleep Lab Staff, physicians, interns, regional hospitals, public D. Primary Customer Groups: Sleep Lab patients, physicians, all health center disciplines E. Age/Population of Patients Served: Neonatal Adolescent Geriatric Pediatric Adult x All Ages Leadership Team First Line Supervisor x N/A ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS A. Demonstrates positive interpersonal skills with patients, patient families, EEG/Sleep Laboratory staff, physicians and other members of the hospital staff. Communicate effectively with co-worker and day staff. B. Performs polysomnographic data acquisitions while monitoring study quality to ensure signal are in artifact-free. Identity and report signal abnormalities. Follow procedural protocols (such as MSLT, CPAP and oxygen titration, etc.) to ensure collection of appropriate data. C. Properly cleans electrodes, CPAP mask, patient room, control/prep rooms and other sleep equipment and if necessary, prepares them for sterilization techniques. Including cleaning the patient's scalp properly. D. Utilizes supplies/resources used in the Neurodiagnostics to reduce waste and contain costs. E. Reviews Sleep Study recordings when necessary with laboratory supervisor. Receives and implements all suggestions for improving the quality of future recordings. F. Recognizes various medical and pharmacological conditions that influence the Sleep Study/EEG recording and attends Sleep/EEG record reading sessions and in-service training sessions. G. Reviews orders, medications, medical history of pending sleep studies; assesses documentation, determines parameters to be monitored and communicate with ordering physician/Medical Director as necessary. H. Administers medications and supplemental 02 as directed by physician. I. Recognizes and responds to serious medical problems per protocol and notifies on-call physician as needed. J. Maintains required department confidentiality and abides by HIPPA regulations. K. Provides competent patient care to the above indicated patient populations by obtaining and appropriately interpreting data, making appropriate decisions based on demonstrated knowledge of age-specific growth and development, and appropriately adapting procedures and treatments. L. Takes an active role in enhancing ability to carry out job functions through personal and professional/job-related growth and development, and participates in medical center and/or departmental education programs. M. Communicates with and performs duties following the philosophy of MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center and the Sisters of Mercy reflecting the organization's Mission, Values, and Guiding Behaviors. N. Supports and abides by all medical center, departmental, and safety policies and procedures. Proactively identifies safety concerns surrounding the work environment. O. Performs other responsibilities as requested by supervisor, manager or department head. ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS A. Assists in regular cleaning of Sleep Lab. B. Assists in regular maintenance of computers and equipment. C. Supports manager and medical director as needed with additional duties. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS A. Education 1. Must be registered by the American Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists or Board Registered in a related field with the ability to apply and pass for a certificate in Sleep medicine, such as a Registered Respiratory Therapist or a Registered Electroneurodiagnostic Technologist. 3. Must be current in CEU's. 4. Must meet criteria to apply and receive Iowa Licensure required by Iowa Department of Public Health. (see #1 of education) B. Experience 1. Two years of PSG experience preferred in a sleep disorders setting. C. Special Skills, Competencies, and Aptitudes 1. Must be capable of dealing with severally ill patients. 2. Self-motivated, detail-oriented individual able to work with minimum supervision. 3. Ability to work on multiple projects at one time and flexibility to meet department needs. 4. Driver's License required, with acceptable driving record. Completes the following mandatory courses (check all that apply): .X Must provide proof of Basic Life Support (BLS Provider, American Heart Association; or American Red Cross, Professional Rescuer-LIVE class only) via current card prior to employment or within 60 days of hire and maintains current status. x Must provide proof of Mandatory Reporting for Child and Dependent Adult Abuse training prior to employment or within 6 months of hire and maintain current status per State of Iowa guidelines Completes Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status. Completes Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) - American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status. Completes Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) - American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status. Completes MANDT Training within 6 months of hire and maintains current status. Completes Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.
