Senior Research Engineer Supervise the engineering team and manage grant-funded research projects at the Western Cooling Efficiency Center (WCEC) in general, and especially at the Solar Thermal Energy Enhancement Lab (STEEL) and Bainer Laboratory facility. The WCEC is part of the Energy and Efficiency Institute (EEI). Interpret UC policies related to HR, contracts and grants, and provide fiscal management of WCEC projects. Manage multi-disciplinary and multi-institution projects including formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources. Function with a high degree of autonomy, exercising independent judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Serve as an advanced technical specialist in several disciplines related to energy efficiency of buildings, power generation, and industrial processes: heat transfer, solar thermal energy, high efficiency heat exchanger design and testing, HVAC engineering principles and performance, computer simulations, and instrumentation. Interpret EEI/WCEC objectives and apply advanced engineering concepts to lead and perform research on complex energy efficiency solutions, where analysis requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors, and problem-solving. frequently includes analysis of unique problems without precedent. Manage and identify proposal opportunities, develop proposals and produce briefings to funding agencies, and participate in relevant conferences, technical events and meetings. Represent the Directors at technical meetings and outreach to EEI/WCEC partners in industry organizations, utilities, and government agencies. Lead the production of technical reports that document project results (technical and financial) to project funders. Apply By Date 09/18/2024 Qualifications Minimum Qualifications For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license, certification and/or educational degree if required of the position. Advance degree in Engineering or equivalent experience and education related to thermal design and experimentation. Experience with heat transfer, process intensification, and related research; and with design of experiments, building systems, laboratory and field data acquisition systems, and analyzing collected data. Knowledge and experience in computer simulations relating to thermal and fluid flow simulations, component and system modeling, heat transfer and fluid dynamics. Experience using creativity and problem-solving skills to apply principles, practices and procedures within discipline to complete difficult assignments. Experience leading teams of engineers including design or application of one or more engineering specialty field. Interpersonal and communication skills to interact and communicate with technical and non-technical individuals, to manage, research, secure, and/or provide information to clarify situations, resolve problems and make public presentations. Project management skills needed to assume responsibility for accomplishment of research objectives. Preferred Qualifications Knowledge and experience related to developing design models, advanced simulations in thermal and mechanical analysis, instrumentation, experimental work. Knowledge of energy research and strong theoretical knowledge in thermal science. The STEEL lab performs research on novel heat exchanger designs and characterization as a component or within a process. Through partnerships with other academic institutions, research labs, industry and utilities, the WCEC participates in the research and development of new technologies, disseminates information, and implement programs that improve energy efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions in the Western United States.
