The Principal Engineer - Mechanical Engineering is accountable for driving technical due-diligence and guidance for mechanical design iterations of the Eos battery system through a stage-gate process including conceptual design, prototype validation, pilot release, and production release. Additionally, they will provide technical reviews, guidance, and technical leadership for all mechanical engineers in the department. Responsibilities Drive technical design and development of complex mechanical parts, assemblies, and systems, working interdepartmentally to ensure design meets requirements for mechanical, structural, manufacturing, etc. Provide technical leadership to the hardware engineering organization. This includes appropriate focus on design, verification, and manufacturing activities. Work with management and other teams to define system or component requirements Check completed drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning Drive review of electrical mounting, routing, and enclosures. Provide guidance and oversight during DFM activities including creation of sheet metal tooling, welding jigs, and other manufacturing processes and equipment Lead other groups in Engineering in integration of current and new designs into production Drive design and testing to meet safety certification standards, such as UL and IEC. Integrate mechanical design requirements with material parameters and process requirements Ensure a safe work environment by following health and safety guidelines and policies Other duties, responsibilities and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice, in the spirit of an agile design group within an active technology company. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Direct experience with the design and development of indoor and/or outdoor enclosure systems a big plus Direct experience in battery energy storage industry a big plus Must be proficient in design of structural weldments Familiarity with FMEA as a tool to optimize design Familiarity with FEA for analysis and design of systems to model static, dynamic, and thermal loads is preferred Proficiency in Solidworks 3D CAD tools for the concept design, detailed design and drawings of components and mechanical assemblies including weldments, sheet metal, machined parts and formed components Detailed knowledge of relevant manufacturing techniques including the use of steel, aluminum, and plastics Proficient in creating drawings using geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T). Skilled with shop tools and ability to be hands-on and creative Education and Experience Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering required. Master's degree in mechanical engineering preferred. Minimum of 12 years' experience. Travel Local Travel Overnight/North America: 10-25% Working Conditions Office Environment - Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time and occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc. Required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading. May be required to exert up to 25 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Factory - The worker may be subject to hazards. Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, vibration, moving vehicles, electrical current, exposure to temperature changes or exposure to chemicals. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, odors, dust, mists, and gases. The noise level in the work environment can be loud. Required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts at distances close to the eyes. Machinery operation requires the use of safety equipment to include but not limited to eye safety glasses, hearing protectors, work boots, and lab coats. May be required to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
