Role Summary: The EMI/EMC engineer plays a critical role in ensuring that electronic systems comply with electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and electromagnetic interference (EMI) standards. This position involves a blend of hands-on testing, design consultation, and regulatory compliance management. Role Responsibilities: EMI/EMC Consult on EMC/EMI testing on-site at 3rd party labs Consult design engineers regarding electronic circuitry and cable designs for EMC compliance Guide design engineers in bench top lab EMI assessments Work with directors and individual contributors to develop test criteria and procedures Guide complete tests, perform tests, reduce the test data, and write the final test reports Write update briefings to management on any significant tests that are performed in the EMI facility Support EMC Test Readiness Reviews, EMI lab management, EMC analyses (analytical and numerical), Preliminary Design Reviews, and Critical Design Reviews Develop correlation equations to estimate pass/fail criteria in onsite EM/EMI chambers and correlate the pass/fail criteria to the company's internal specifications Review and advise on domestic and international automotive EMI/EMC certification requirements (CISPR 25, etc). Review schematics and layout to make changes to mitigate EMI/EMC issues; this includes component selection and review, taking into account cost and function. Make recommendations for system-level EMI/EMC strategy. Run in-house pre-certification scans to identify and then fix potential EMI/EMC issues. Assist in all official EMI/EMC certification testing Team Collaboration Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including hardware engineers, software developers, and quality assurance specialists Support team members across various stages of the product development lifecycle Foster a collaborative working environment by actively engaging with different teams to address and solve problems Skills Technical Leadership skills Analytical and conceptual thinking Supervisory and management skills Experience in developing strategies for R&D Communication skills - interpersonal, presentation and written Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and rapidly changing environment Excellent organization and delegation skills Strategic/visionary minded Required Skills: Experience with using a Spectrum Analyzer, Near-field probes, Radiofrequency (RF) Amplifiers, Signal Generators, and/or EMI Receivers Hands-on experience with automotive test equipment and pre-compliance EMC test setup in a EMC lab environment such as the LISN EMC test setup Ability to analyze and review schematic circuit diagram and PCB layouts, and mechanical designs for applying electromagnetic design mitigation Possess general understanding and interpretation of the automotive EMC regulatory standards and pass/fail criteria pertaining to the CISPR 25 in addition to the company's internal specifications Understanding of and ability to specify electronic system test hardware such as oscilloscopes, multi-meters, logic analyzers, function generators, electronic load banks, power supplies, power analyzers, network components, ESD gun, etc. Knowledge of EMI test setups including chamber test Antennas, test electronic equipment, and/or grounding setup Knowledge of how to use an Oscilloscope, Power Supply, and the different type of antennas used for automotive EMC radiated testing Experience with generating EMI/EMC Control and Verification Plan Desired Skills: Experience and network within the Volkswagen Group Knowledge of infotainment and driver assistance systems Understanding and interpretation for different market regions regulatory certification approval standards such as FCC in NA, RED in EU, and SRRC in China Basic understanding of RF design, circuit theory, and electromagnetic principles including component and cable shielding, filters, magnetics, microwaves and antenna characteristics and operational theory Workplace Flexibility: Travel to worldwide locations required, less than 25% Years of Relevant Experience: 7+ years of experience in EMC compliance testing industry Required Education: Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline Desired Education: Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline Compensation Salary range is dependent on factors such as geographical differentials, credentials or certifications, industry-based experience, qualification and training. In the city of Mountain View, California, the salary range for this position is $132,400 - $202,000.
