Paramedic Department: Medical Employment Type: Fixed Term Contract Location: Global Reporting To: Senior Nurse Description We are hiring paramedics to join Carnival's fleet of North American brands, including Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruise Lines, Holland America Lines, Seabourn and P&O Australia. Paramedics provide high standards of individualized routine and emergency care to guests and crew. They act as first responders, triaging emergency calls, assessing and treating on the scene, and transferring patients to the shipboard medical center for definitive care. Through specific patient group directives, paramedics can practice autonomously under the authority of doctors, assessing patients and providing treatment or advising for particular conditions. In addition to first response duties, paramedics work closely with shipboard nurses and doctors caring for patients and attend daily walk-in clinic hours. Paramedics also perform various technical and non-clinical administrative tasks that support the medical center's efficient and safe operation under the Senior Nurse's direction and supervision. Additional duties include equipment checks, medication and clinical consumables inventory management, participation in drills, audits, inspections, and training of other crew members. Some technical skills are learned and practiced onboard, such as X-rays acquisition and performing a wide array of laboratory tests and other procedures. All medical staff provides a high level of customer service, always maintaining a professional, dignified, friendly, assertive, and polite manner and demonstrating performance consistent with the Vision, Mission, and Strategic Plan of the organization. Successful candidates will be assigned to work four-month contracts onboard our fleet of cruise ships operating worldwide, with two-month intermissions. Consistently manages all emergency medical communications, employing resources effectively while considering patient confidentiality and location. Always responds to the scene of all emergency calls in a timely manner and in accordance with current Fleet Medical Regulations and procedures. Performs prompt and effective first response, triage, stabilization, package, and appropriate transfer at all times. Always operates within written protocols, recognizing the limits of his or her own abilities and initiating measures to obtain support when appropriate. Routinely provides high-level, evidence-based patient care in accordance with doctor's orders and current Fleet Medical Regulations. Demonstrates competency and safe practice in medication dispensing and administration at all times. Always writes patient care documentation that is concise, timely, complete, and legible. Always operates all patient care equipment appropriately and safely. Always listens attentively, is respectful and considerate, and uses non-technical language when communicating with patients and their families. Consistently demonstrates sensitivity to every patient's culture, age, gender, ability, and socioeconomic status. Assists the medical staff in maintaining cost-efficient pharmacy and supply par levels. Integrates responsible financial practices into medical operations and demonstrates fiscal compliance at all times. Assists the medical staff in monitoring all costs, expenditures, and inventory efficiencies; where appropriate, makes suggestions on cost savings and revenue-enhancing initiatives. Embraces and supports Reduce, Increase, Create, Eliminate (RICE) initiatives without interfering with proper patient care. Safety and compliance: Always complies with Fleet Medical Regulations, Public Health policies and procedures, Fleet Regulations and other Company policies and procedures, and relevant governmental regulations. Participates in the continual maintenance and prompt repair of all medical equipment. Always adheres to the guidelines, policies, and principles of his or her applicable professional registration body. Always complies with all ILO requirements and demonstrates flexibility with on-call schedules and workload. Complies with all patient safety practices, including infection control, at all times. Routinely performs General Emergency Organization duties as directed in the ERO. Customer satisfaction: Participates in regular reviews of eOBE scores and comments; implements actions to continually improve customer satisfaction. Promptly assists in the evaluation of all patient complaints; participates productively in service recovery strategies. Maintains excellent customer focus in all interactions, ensuring that medical services are consistently perceived as being accessible at all times. Interacts and communicates informally and professionally with passengers in public areas as operational needs permit. Always promotes a harassment-free environment Application requirements Successful candidates must hold the following: A Paramedic qualification at an Advanced Life Support level A currently valid professional registration with a regulatory body (US candidates should hold an NREMT Paramedic registration) A minimum of three years of clinical experience as a registered paramedic Background experience in public ambulance service, emergency response, or other acute care settings, including remote sites medicine The most recent work experience should be in a clinical setting A valid ALS/ACLS certificate before joining a vessel PALS certification expected within the first year of employment A Valid passport Eligibility to be issued a United States C1/D Visa (not applicable for US and Canadian citizens) Verbal and written fluency in English, both conversational and technical Computer literacy and experience with Microsoft Windows and Microsoft 365 productivity suite Experience with the use of electronic health records is preferred Outstanding interpersonal, customer service, and communication skills Job highlights As a shipboard Paramedic, you will have the opportunity to travel the world and practice your profession at sea in an exciting, challenging, and unique environment.
