Job Summary: The Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting providers with patient care, chart management, scheduling appointments, and assisting with in office procedures; other duties may include assisting the front desk with clerical duties when needed. This person must convey a positive image of the medical office. Essential Functions: 1. Complies with all HIPAA and OSHA regulations and policies. 2. Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned which may include: checking schedules and organizing patient flow; accompanying patients to exam/procedure room; assisting patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc.; collecting patient history; performing screenings per provider guidelines; assisting physicians/nurses with various procedures; charting; relaying instructions to patients/families; answering calls and providing pertinent information. 3. Fulfills clerical responsibilities as assigned which may include: sending/receiving patient medical records; obtaining lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.; completing forms/requisitions as needed; scheduling appointments; verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics; managing charts to ensure information completed and filed appropriately. 4. Fulfills environmental responsibilities as assigned which may include: setting up instruments and equipment according to department protocol; cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control; cleaning sterilizer according to scheduled maintenance program and keeping appropriate records; ordering, sorting, storing supplies; restocking exam/procedure rooms. 5. Fulfills organizational responsibilities as assigned which may include: respecting/promoting patient rights; responding appropriately to emergency codes; sharing problems relating to patients and/or staff with immediate supervisors quickly. 6. Other duties as assigned. Competencies: 1. Knowledge of the health care field. 2. Knowledge of information that must be conveyed to patients and their families. 3. Skill in performing tasks correctly. 4. Skill intact and diplomacy in interpersonal interactions. 5. Skill in understand patient education needs and effectively sharing information with patients and their families. 6. Skill in identifying equipment problems and correcting or notifying supervisor. 7. Ability to be flexible and handle changing priorities. 8. Ability to communicate clearly. 9. Ability to project a pleasant and professional image. 10. Ability to plan, prioritize and complete delegated tasks. 11. Ability to demonstrate compassion and caring for others. 12. Ability to apply written instructions and standardized work practices. 13. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with physicians, co-workers, patients and patient's families. Education and Work Experience: 1. High School Diploma Required 2. Graduate of medical assisting program preferred 3. Minimum of one-year work experience in public contact job. Preferable in a medical office environment Certification and Licenses Required: 1. Certified or Registered Medical Assistant certification required (CMA/ RMA/ ABR-OE) Environmental/Working Conditions: Combination of medical office and exam/procedure room settings. Well-lighted, well-ventilated, adequate space. Exposure to communicable diseases and other conditions common to medical office setting. Physical/Mental Demands: Must be able to use appropriate body mechanics techniques when making necessary patient transfers and helping patients with walking, dressing, etc. Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds of supplies.
