Job Description: Job Function Provide skilled, ethical nursing care and assist clinicians in identifying and treating health problems within the student population. Provide health education, supportive consultation, and patient referral under the supervision of the Associate Director of Nursing and Assistant Vice President of Health Wellness/Director of Health Services and Quality Improvement (DHSQI). Perform various clinical tasks, including but not limited to administering immunizations, allergen immunotherapy, phlebotomy, and travel-related health care to students who need these services. All duties are performed within the scope of practice of the registered nurse as defined by the Nurse Practice Act of New York State. Essential Duties Summary Direct Nursing Care to Patients: Administer immunizations, tuberculosis testing, and emergency treatment anaphylaxis under the NYS Nurse Practice Act regulations. Administer medications, including injectables, following direct orders from PCHS clinicians. Coordinate the travel-related health care services provided in the PCHS, which include administration of travel-related vaccines, medications, and anticipatory guidance. Administer allergy treatments following the regimen of the patient's allergist and a review of the regimen by the Director of Health Services and Quality Improvement. Triage care: screen patients and refer them to the PCHS clinicians as indicated. Conduct clinical nursing assessments, diagnoses, and treatments within scope, including performing vital signs, health histories, symptom analysis and physical assessments as indicated by history. Additionally, perform treatment management such as wound dressing. Perform phlebotomy, electrocardiography, and other laboratory testing (including rapid HIV testing) and collect laboratory specimens. Actively collaborate with PCHS clinicians in assessing and treating health problems; collaborate with and act as a consultant to reception staff to promote efficient patient flow. Institute and perform basic emergency life-support procedures. Document nursing assessment and treatment in the electronic and paper health records. Serve as a medical chaperone for sensitive exams, including but not limited to IUD insertion and removal. Patient Education and Health Promotion: Provide individualized anticipatory guidance, screening, and health education to promote and maintain health. Refer to PCHS clinicians and health educators for further information as indicated. Organize annual vaccine clinics and health fairs with the Francine A. Lefrak Center for Health and Wellness. Develop patient education materials for conditions and concerns relevant to the student population. Patient Communication: Communicate with patients regarding laboratory results, advice, after-hours triage care, emergency visits, follow-up instructions, and referrals. Provide precise and accurate information to enable the patient to make informed healthcare decisions and promote the patient's active participation in her care. Promote positive patient relations and treat others with care and respect, maintaining confidentiality, privacy, and dignity. Clinic Operations Coordinates and conducts incoming and transfer students' immunization compliance in collaboration with the Public Health Response Team. Maintains emergency supplies for code cart Orders and maintains an inventory of vending machine supplies. Ensures that the vending machine is appropriately stocked for care. Conducts analysis and assessment of utilization rates of supplies in vending machines. In collaboration with the Director of Operations: Order laboratory supplies and medications and ensure their appropriate storage in locked cabinets and refrigerators Review expiration dates and appropriately dispose of expired stock by federal and local regulations. Order and maintain inventory of all other medical supplies utilized by the clinic. Other Duties In collaboration with the Director of Health Services and Quality Improvement, Perform Quality Control procedures on laboratory testing equipment and ensure its accurate functioning. Supervise work-study students in the performance of their duties: the collection, cleaning, and sterilization of instruments and other equipment; the cleaning and stocking of the clinical exam rooms and the vending machine; and the proper disposal of biohazard waste materials. Oversee and manage the operations and maintenance of an autoclave machine. Ensure that all labs collected daily are provided to the external laboratory for processing. Proactively develop strategies to improve efficiency, decrease waste, and improve the patient experience. Assist in developing and reviewing new and existing policies and procedures. Other office or administrative type work as assigned Professional Performance Standards/Compliance/Clinical Quality Maintain currency of licensure as required by the New York State Education Department. Support and participate in PCHS Quality Assurance activities, departmental provider meetings, case conferences, and supervisor/peer review. Attend professional continuing education activities and conferences. Stay current with and adhere to federal, state, and local health regulations and recommendations, particularly immunization requirements. Develop and evaluate own goals for professional growth. Participate in annual performance evaluations and review of the RN job description. Participate in updating departmental and patient education literature. Maintain confidentiality of patient information as per HIPAA and FERPA standards. Demonstrate a knowledge of and sensitivity to diverse patient cultures and a commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity. Contribute to the orientation of new clinical and administrative staff. Update computer skills as required for documentation of patient records and others. Performs other duties as assigned by the Associate Director of Nursing and the Director of Health Services and Quality Improvement Skills, Qualifications & Requirements: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required Qualification Summary Current New York State registered nurse license One to two years of experience in ambulatory care A demonstrated interest in the health care of adolescents and young women and reproductive healthcare Phlebotomy and electrocardiography skills Experience in immunotherapy Basic life support skills Computer skills Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Experience in working with electronic medical health record system Preferred Qualification Summary Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Prior work experience in College Health or Student Health Setting Experience as a medical chaperone Experience with trauma-informed care models Experience with health outreach and health promotion Prior experience working with adolescents and young adults around health education. Scope of Practice based on: Position Details Full Time 12 months per year Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm This is an in person, 5 day a week position. Salary Range: $80,000 - $84,870.00 annually The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training.
