Job Details Job Location Winnebago Public Health Department - Whirling Thunder - WINNEBAGO, NE Position Type Full Time Salary Range $14.86 - $20.81 Hourly Description Fitness Specialist Reports To: Fitness Director/Project Coordinator Closes: Open Until Filled Salary/Wage: Dependent on Qualifications and Experience Status: Regular, Full-time (Non-exempt) Location: Whirling Thunder Wellness Program at the Blackhawk Community Center in Winnebago, Nebraska Job Purpose & Position Overview The purpose of this position is to promote diabetes prevention, health and wellness through activities for children and adults in the community of Winnebago. The Fitness Specialist will function as a member of a multi-disciplinary team within the Whirling Thunder Wellness Programs. Specific Job Duties/Responsibilities: Demonstrates the Winnebago Tribe's core mission, vision, and values. Responsible for implementation of specialized exercise programs for the purpose of promoting health and wellness for school age children and adults. Perform body compositions and physical fitness assessments for program participants. Analyze body composition data and interpret information for individuals as patient education, make recommendations and schedule follow-up body compositions. Develop and initiate community health promotion/diabetes prevention events as consistent with the Whirling Thunder Program annual goals and objectives. Function as liaison with local K-6 school children to foster participants and communication regarding all youth wellness activities. Responsible for data collecting regarding each activity/event, number of participants and able to furnish a monthly statistical and narrative report. Has access to confidential medical information, must maintain confidentiality regarding patient information. Performs frequent group educational sessions such as: in-service for local and area reservations, conference presentations and classroom presentations. Develop and/or instruct group exercise classes. Develop and/or instruct exercise programs for individual participants. Responsible for collecting appropriate data in accordance with SDPI Key Measures. Responsible for assisting in implementation of SDPI Physical Activity Best Practice. Maintain and clean all wellness center areas if necessary. Sign-up and orientate any new wellness center members to the facility and equipment. Serve as lifeguard for the community pool as needed. Application of proper lifeguard surveillance and rescue techniques. Duties listed are only an illustration of various types of work performed. Qualifications Required Qualifications/Skills: A.A. degree in education, recreation or related health field, or 2-3 years related work preferred. Must obtain Personal Trainer Certification (CPT) within 6 months of hire date, as directed by supervisor. Must be in excellent physical condition and be able to lead rigorous exercise sessions and be capable of performing strenuous duties. Must be willing to participate in required training opportunities. Must have or be able to obtain within three (3) months certifications in CPR and First Aid. Must be able to work nights, weekends and holidays if necessary. Possess planning, development, and advanced organizational skills. Must be reliable, punctual and able to perform job duties independently. Advanced computer skills, knowledgeable in data base applications, word processing, and graphic layout. Be able to respond to emergency situations such as accidents, injuries, and disruptive behaviors of youth and adults. Must have valid driver's license and must be able to meet driver's eligibility guidelines. Be widely recognized as a positive health role model to the community: drug and alcohol free. Must complete Privacy Act Training, Confidentiality and Medical Records Security. Must be able to pass a lifeguard certification test within three (3) months of hire. Thorough knowledge and application of lifeguard techniques. An understanding of facility characteristics, rules, policies, and procedures. Supervisory Responsibilities: N/A Training Requirements: Must be willing to pursue a training and educational plan. Must attend all meetings and training courses as directed by Wellness Director. Physical Requirements: Normal to heavy work which includes the ability to lift up over 50 lbs. Regularly required to run, walk, stand, and sit for extended periods of time and use hands and feet to operate various office and workout equipment. While performing daily duties, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. Mental Requirements: Reading, writing, calculating Above average social interaction skills Reasoning/Analysis Works with minimal to no supervision Language Requirements: Must possess the ability to read, write, and speak the English language fluently. Must be able to continually and effectively employ professional verbal and written communications skills.
