Job Description PURPOSE OF POSITION: Computed Tomography (CT) technologists use computerized tomography (CT) scanners to produce cross- section images of patients' internal organs and tissues for the diagnosis of medical issues AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES: Under general supervision, coordinates and supervises the activities of staff Radiographers, Nurses' Aides and /or clerks. Schedule patient procedure and performs CT imaging as per protocol. Will maintain and coordinate the availability of CT services with other services, clinics or other facilities and locations under his/her jurisdiction. SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Review exam orders, consult with radiologist, schedule patients and arrange for transportation as indicated. Identify patient and document all information pertinent to final report in the RIS and PACS Prepare all patients for radiological procedures requested by the clinician. Arrange for proper protection of patients, public and staff from infectious diseases/materials. Demonstrates skill in setup and administration of IV contrast media. Explains MRI procedure and process of administration of contrast to patient and engages radiologist and/or LIP as appropriate per policy. Makes sure contrast media questionnaire has been filled out by patient. Assess any existing intravenous line or selects appropriate venipuncture site and attaches injector tubing to patient's intravenous line. Loads and programs contrast media power injector according to established departmental procedures and assigns appropriate injection rates based on access and protocol. Ensures that all emergency equipment is readily available. Injects intravenous contrast using the power injector and monitors patient for signs of contrast media reaction and/or evidence of extravasation. Notifies radiologist or LIP in case of reaction or extravasation. Oversee the work of Radiographers and ancillary staff. Instruct technical staff in routine, special positions and procedures. Perform difficult and highly specialized examinations in CT (Computed Tomography). Perform daily checks of CT imaging equipment, immobilization devices and other necessary accessories. Reviews daily maintenance, quality assurance and maintains documents and logs as required and mandated by the department and various regulatory agencies. Act as the Quality Assurance Technologist, perform image processor densitometry and document the records required as directed. (Maintains adequate stocks of supplies and materials needed for use in the department.) Conduct inspections and checks equipment for defects and assures proper use of such equipment through instruction and review. Report any unexpected patient incidents in accordance with the occurrence report protocol. Maintain and exercise all mandated radiation safety regulations. Maintain basic care of all the CT imaging equipment. All malfunctions are to be reported to management staff whether mechanical, electrical or suspect and service request documentation completed. Maintain a clean and safe work environment for both patients and staff. Perform other duties as deemed necessary in the event of emergencies or disaster. Continue professional growth and development of job-related skills on an ongoing basis. Participate in continuing education activities. Assist radiologist during radiographic procedures as required. Ensure all examinations are accessioned, documented in RIS and all images sent to PACS Maintain a professional demeanor and related to patients, physicians, staff and public in an appropriate manner. In accordance with HIPAA (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), staff members will exercise due diligence in ensuring patient privacy and confidentiality. As required by City, State and Federal regulations exposure to ionizing radiation will be kept As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) Responsible for the loading of the power injector and the operation of such injector during contrast enhanced cases Minimum Qualifications 1. For Supervisory Assignments: a valid license and current registration to practice Diagnostic Radiography as a Radiologic Technologist issued by the NYSDOH; and two (2) years of Radiologic Technologist experience performing duties consistent with Assignment Levels I and II, one (1) year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity. 2. For Specialized Imaging Assignments: a valid license and current registration to practice Diagnostic Radiography as a Radiologic Technologist issued by the NYSDOH; and possession of a current advanced level certification for the performance of these procedures. Department Preferences QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB: EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION(S)/LICENSE(S): Bachelor's Degree. New York State License Advance certification by ARRT License License by NYS to Inject Contrast BLS Certified KNOWLEDGEABLE IN: Human anatomy Comprehensive knowledge of radiology Spanish or a second language preferred EQUIPMENT/MACHINES OPERATED: CT Oxygen tanks Nebulizer POCT equipment AED EKG Computer Copier/fax Spirometer COMPUTER PROGRAMS/SOFTWARE OPERATED Computer literacy essential Word programs Electronic Medical Record Referral System Scheduling System YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: 2+ years of experience with CT Benefits All Radiologic Technologists in Assignment Levels II and III shall receive a differential of $7,500 per annum to be cross-trained on different modalities of radiologic imaging and to be cross-assigned (once trained) to different imaging settings depending on patient volume and staffing needs within a facility.
