GENERAL PURPOSE: Manages the activities of the Coding areas. Supervises staff in area of responsibility and serves as a liaison for outside vendor of contracted services. Provides support for personnel, planning and problem resolution. Recommends goals and objectives for the area. Promotes positive customer relations and ensures communication with staff. JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Directs and supervises assigned staff in Coding areas. Oversees simple visit coding and coding denial coding staff to ensure timely and accurate classification and abstracting of coding. Supervises the accurate and timely coding of diagnoses and procedures and abstraction of data from records. Recruits, hires, promotes, evaluates performance, recommends salary adjustments, determines disciplinary action and performs related personnel actions. Responsible for final approval of payroll in time management system software. Develops and implements training programs for staff within unit. Perform supervisory duties, including scheduling employee time off and verifying employee time off. Meet with new staff weekly to ensure successful onboarding of the staff. Assume responsibility of Manager or Lead Coder as appropriate. Works with supervisors of other departments to identify and resolve problems and change procedures to provide optimum service. Oversees, monitors or performs internal audits of coding to determine compliance with coding policies and procedures annually and on an ad hoc basis. Conducts in-depth reviews of medical record chart documentation to ensure compliance with coding clinics and guidelines. This includes National and Local Coverage Determinations to ensure proper coding of accounts. Coordinates yearly or more often coders¿ audits to ensure compliance. Develops goals and objectives, recommends and implements policy and procedure changes in work methods and procedures within unit. Prepares routine operational and special reports as needed. Creates and updates presentations/webinars to educate and train HIM coders coding and coding updates. Provides education to ensure compliance of coding either to an individual or to a team. Prepares orientation materials and orients new hires on coding training, encoder usage, system usage, etc. Onboards all new coders and orients to HIM Coding policies and procedures. Assists in formulation of departmental budgets and recommends methods of cost reduction. Ensures the maintenance of adequate supplies and maintenance of equipment. Recruit, interview, hire, evaluate performance, enforce personnel policies and guidelines, counsel staff on performance issues, develop performance improvement plans, implement disciplinary actions and perform other related personnel functions for more than ten employees in conjunction with Coding Manager. Perform 90 day and annual performance evaluations. Serves as definitive hospital resource for coding guidelines and principles. Other duties as assigned QUALIFICATIONS: B.S. in Health Information Technology or health related field required. Minimum of two years coding in an acute care facility required or an equivalent combination of education and experience. DRG/APC/AGG assignment experience required preferably in a tertiary care facility or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT and HCPCS required. Working knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy required. Successful completion of American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) accreditation examination for Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or (Registered Health Information Technician) RHIT or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) required or Certified Professional Coder (CPC) from American Academy of Professional Coders required or Certified Medical Coder (CMC) from the Practice required. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
