Registered Nurse - PICU (Nights) Nurse Currently recruiting a Registered Nurse (RN) - PICU (Nights) to provide care to Active Duty heroes, their families, and retirees at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland . Hours required are 7 days per week, . Services will be required on Federal holidays. DUTIES OF THE REGISTERED NURSE (RN) - PICU: Ensure compliance with standard of care and practice in accordance with all established policies, procedures, and guidelines used in the medical treatment MTF and IAW JC guidelines. Plan appropriate nursing care set forth by the MTF, and IAW JC guidelines. Have the ability to react to any emergency situation, (e.g. cardiac or respiratory arrest, hemorrhage, shock, severe physical trauma, psychiatric reaction, etc.). Demonstrate the ability to recognize adverse signs and symptoms and reacts quickly and appropriately in emergency situations. Serve as member of resuscitation team. Demonstrate proper preparation of patient's for treatments and procedures, to include surgical interventions. Render professional intensive nursing care to critically ill pediatric patients with medical and/or surgical conditions within the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Provide proper care and evaluation of post-procedural patients. Continually assess condition of patients for potential or life threatening crises. Identify and address deviation from baseline vital signs, assessments, and lab tests. Distinguish between normal and abnormal physical findings (from physical assessment and vital sign assessment). The contracted RN shall document, report, and follow through on abnormal findings with physicians/nurses. Demonstrate understanding and follow the safe operation of medical equipment used for patient care as identified in the equipment user manual or similar documentation in workspace. Operate and monitor the performance of sophisticated equipment used in the care of critically ill patients, including but not limited to: mechanical ventilation, hemodynamic monitoring equipment, cardiac monitors, etc. Interpret and respond to complex technological data generated by such equipment. Be knowledgeable of equipment and supply terminology and skill sufficient to identify and use necessary equipment and supplies properly and to communicate proper use with nurses, medical staff, patients, and family members. Operate defibrillators, EKG machines, and cardiac monitor. Care for patients with central venous catheters, arterial lines and mechanical ventilators. Demonstrate ability to effectively communicate plans, action, and collaborate with a diverse healthcare team for the benefit of the patient, family and organization. Effectively educate patients and families regarding involvement in the plan of care, promotion of self-care, management of symptoms, and follow-up care. Formulate a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning. Obtain and document patient and pertinent family history. Interact professionally with patient/family and involve patient/family in the formation of plan of care. Instruct patient and/or families on preventative health care and follow-up care. Identify and address psychological, cultural, and ethnic needs of patients and family. Recover both stable and unstable pediatric patients from general and regional anesthesia and deep sedation. Be required to float to the Inpatient Pediatric Ward during times of low census and according to staffing needs. Provide coverage when warranted for medical transports to retrieve critically ill children from other health care facilities for the purpose of receiving care at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Bethesda. QUALIFICATIONS OF THE REGISTERED NURSE (RN) - PICU: Degree/Education: Nurse will have successfully completed the undergraduate or graduate degree appropriate to the sub-specialty. Certifications in addition to Basic Life Support: ): In addition to BLS, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Cardiac Life Support (PALS) required to work on the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Experience: Minimum of 1-year experience within the preceding 3-years in pediatric intensive care unit. Will consider applicants with a combined minimum of 2 years neonatal ICU/pediatric ICU experience and ability to pass written PICU competency. Licensure/Registration: :Valid license in at least one (1) state territory or commonwealth of the US.
