Work Shifts TOUR II: 7:00 A.M - 3:30 P.M Job Description PURPOSE OF POSITION: Under the general direction and supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse or other licensed professional personnel, provides age-appropriate supportive care to the assigned patient population in the Operating Room, from children to the elderly. AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES: (OR) OPERATING ROOM SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Scrubs on all surgical cases. Assists the Registered Nurse with circulating duties. Sets up for surgical procedures utilizing aseptic techniques. Does the surgical count with the circulating nurse according to Operating Room policy. Collects, labels and prepares specimens for Pathology according to lab requirements. Check's patient identity and informed consent. Ensures that patient is properly positioned on OR table for indicated procedure and safety straps is secured Decontaminates and prepares surgical instruments for sterilization/disinfection utilizing established Infection Control policies and Association of peri-Operative Nurses (AORN) recommendations. Assists with transportation of patients to and from the O.R. maintaining age specific safety precautions. Adheres to Regulatory Agencies and NYC Health + Hospital/ Kings County Standards and Policies. Maintains the security and confidentiality of data and information accordance with Patient's Rights Policies. Ensures and respects privacy and comfort while rendering care. Demonstrates safe use of patient care equipment utilizing all safety precautions according to manufacturer's recommendation and NYC Health + Hospital/ Kings County Service Policy. Observes symptoms or change in the patient status and promptly reports same to the Registered Nurse (RN). Adheres to organizational policy for annual education, assessment and in-service education. Maintains Surgical Technologist skills by attending education sessions pertinent to perioperative practice. Participates in unit/department Performance Improvement and Hospital wide activities. Assists with the sterilization of instruments. Maintains surgical asepsis at all time. Cleans and returns equipment to proper place. Assist in preparing the Operating Room for surgery ensuring that all equipment is in working condition Carries out infection control protocols; maintains Universal Precautions. Replenishes supplies in the OR. suite. Implements and complies with Joint Commission's National Patient Safety Goals for Hospitals, such as identifying patients correctly, preventing infections, preventing mistakes in surgery, improving staff communications, and identifying patient's safety risks. Uses effective communication technique appropriate to the patient's age. Demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships when dealing with staffs, patients, and visitors to promote teamwork, efficiency, and provide quality patient care. Identifies ethical issues that arise during the perioperative phase including issues of conflict resolution, withholding resuscitation of life sustaining treatment and addresses them through established Hospital Committee. Observes Department of Nursing uniform code and dress guidelines. Wears a valid NYC Health + Hospital/ Kings County identification card that is visible at all times. Provides proper notification for absence and tardiness. Minimum Qualifications For Appointment to Level I 1. Documented designation of Grandfathered status as a Surgical Technologist; or 2. Completion of an appropriate training program for Surgical Technologists in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard or Public Health Service Commissioned Corps; or 3. Service in the federal government to the extent that the individual performed duties related to the practice of Surgical Technology. For Appointment to Level II 1. Hold and maintain a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting. Note: Effective January 1, 2015, all newly hired incumbents to the title of Surgical Technologist must hold and maintain a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential and be assigned at Level II. In addition, any employee who functions as a Surgical Technologist will be required to annually complete fifteen (15) hours of continuing education in order to remain qualified to perform the functions of a Surgical Technologist at an HHC facility.
