POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Clinical Microbiology Supervisors, oversees routine aspects of Kiestra operation and management in the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory. This Tech Specialist may assist in the development, monitoring and preventive maintenance of the Kiestra, as well as generation of various performance reports, and identification of opportunities for improvement This position requires performance of all MT II duties in Bacteriology including weekend and Holiday rotations consistent with other technical staff work schedules. Beyond mastery of standard laboratory protocols and methods, demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of the theory and technical applications of Clinical Microbiology, demonstrates thorough understanding of the clinical relevance of laboratory tests. Keeps abreast of new developments in his/her areas of specialty and Clinical Microbiology in general. SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION RECEIVED : Under supervision of Clinical Microbiology supervisors with guidance from directors. When performing Tech Specialist duties, reports to the appropriate section supervisor. SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION EXCERCISED : Functions as an assistant supervisor on weekends, holidays and in absence of supervisors. MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT USED : Instrumentation as required for technical functions of Microbiology. Standard office equipment such as telephone, PC, Laboratory Information System (LIS), Hospital Information Systems, calculator, copier, fax machine, and the like. Familiarity with Laboratory Information Systems and PC's is a must. TYPICAL RESPONSIBIITIES: Performs all duties of a Medical Technologist II, including weekend and holiday rotations. (80%) Additional duties (20%): Maintain/update Kiestra: oversee QC, schedule PM and service, facilitate instrument updates. Investigate problems and initiates solutions either independently or in consultation with supervisors. Assists in troubleshooting and service of Keistra and serve as a key resource for equipment operational features. Keeps apprised of problems and solutions. Train Clinical Microbiology Laboratories staff to properly utilize and troubleshoot Kiestra. Acts as a technical consultant. Assists in reviewing and writing procedure manuals so that they are up-to-date and functional. Oversee the work performance of others in his/her area of expertise and provides supervision of routine laboratory operations in the absence of supervisors, especially on weekends/holidays and reduced service shifts. Provide input for coworker's Performance Evaluations. Aid in the preparation of management reports, data collection and analysis of laboratory statistics, as needed. Assist with competency testing of staff. FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to multi task with strong organizational skills. EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree in related science and 6 years' clinical experience or Master' s degree in related science and 3 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. NYS license in the Clinical Laboratory Technologist category required.
