JOB SUMMARY The Waste Manager directs projects involving hazardous materials and other chemical safety issues. This position conducts training programs for the education of all Patriot employees. The Waste Manager also ensures Patriot's compliance with all laws, regulations, and company policies and procedures applicable to Patriot's dealings with hazardous waste. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Direct and maintain the complex schedule of activities of the Hazardous Waste department within the company, such as conducting inspections, container collection, processing waste containers and preparing comprehensive documentation for waste shipments. Manage and assist the inspection of sites, examination of equipment, extraction of samples, and the performance of analysis to properly evaluate regulatory compliance and risk in the storage, treatment, handling, minimization, transportation, disposal, and record keeping related to hazardous waste. Review and approve company Hazardous Material Business Plans to ensure proper communication of chemical inventory and appropriate emergency preparedness planning. Train employees and management in the areas of infectious wastes, hazard communication, asbestos, and other hazardous substances, the proper handling and disposal of such materials, and Patriot's Hazardous Material Business Plans. Promptly and accurately complete paperwork associated with the hazardous waste program according to company policy. Identify hazardous waste, assess the risks to public health and safety, and provide emergency responses to minimize and prevent health and risks from contamination. Coordinate special waste disposal projects including the handling of toxic gases, infectious materials, asbestos, hazardous chemicals, and mixed waste. Describe scope of work for potential contracts for chemically contaminated property, including sampling, testing, removal, decontamination, and disposal. Analyze blueprints and drawings of facilities to assess feasibility and safety of storage of hazardous materials. Other reasonable directives, responsibilities and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice. EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND REQUIREMENTS Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Physical Science, Biology, or a related field is required. Five (5) years' experience in hazardous waste management is required. Driving record that meets company standards and current DMV printout, required. Forty-hour HAZWOPER, DOT HazMat, and Hazardous Waste Training is required. Completion of OSHA Hazardous Waste Site Worker Operational Certificate within the first year of employment is required. Thorough knowledge and understanding of industry best practices, risk assessment techniques, American Society for Testing and Materials standards, and all applicable laws and regulations as they relate to the hazardous materials management field is required. Familiarity with ten-day exempt transfer station requirements is required. SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES Effective organization and prioritization skills. Well-developed written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency with lab testing techniques and requirements. Ability to work collaboratively and utilize analysis to solve complex problems. Highly-developed ability to adapt to rapidly changing situations. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS Continuous sitting and tasks involving repetitive motions using wrists, hands and fingers are required for periods of 6-8+ hours at a time. Frequent pushing or pulling of weights, twisting, and crouching for prolonged periods are required. Frequent carrying of weights from 0-50 pounds is required. This job operates in the field, with travel required. The work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, requiring the adherence to basic safety measures. The work environment may involve moderate exposure to the elements, including extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and loud noises.
