The Controller will handle high-level accounting, managerial accounting, and oversee the financial activities of the company. As head of the accounting department, the controller will manage and supervise all aspects of accounting from payroll to tax compliance. Will report to the President, and will assist with the development of internal control policies, procedures, and financial planning as needed.Financial Management SkillsProven ability to manage cash flow, ensure timely payments, and oversee billing processes (including progress billings and retainage).Expertise in ï¬nancial planning, forecasting, and analysis, with a focus on KPIs relevant to construction (e.g., gross margin, backlog, overhead).Ability to prepare and interpret ï¬nancial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements.Team and Leadership SkillsManage and develop accounting and administrative teams (typically 3-6 staff members).Ability to collaborate with project managers, estimating teams, and operations to ensure accurate cost tracking and reporting.Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively work with owners, bankers, CPA, bonding agents, and other external parties.Support the executive team with strategic ï¬nancial insights and recommendations.Help implement scalable accounting processes and systems to support growth.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIESResponsible for supervision of the employees.Supervise staff following Company policy and applicable Federal, State, and local applicable lawsResponsibilities include interviewing, hiring, training and development, and terminating employeesPlan, assign, and direct workAppraise performance, reward, and discipline employeesAddress complaints and resolve problemsEDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCEBachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or related ï¬eld (CPA or CMA designation is a plus).10+ years of accounting experience, with at least 5 years in a controller or senior management role.Construction industry experience required, particularly in job costing and project accounting.Experience with companies of comparable size ($20-50M revenue) or larger.OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIESExpertise in Construction Job Costing:Ability to manage project budgets, cost codes, and work-in-progress (WIP) schedules.Experience with percentage-of-completion and completed-contract accounting methods.Strong understanding of GAAP and construction-speciï¬c accounting regulations.Knowledge of bonding and construction loan compliance requirements.Experience in ensuring compliance with federal and state tax regulations, including sales tax, payroll tax, and income tax ï¬lings.Familiarity with prevailing wage reporting and certiï¬ed payroll requirements.Ability to identify and mitigate ï¬nancial risks, including contract risks and insurance requirements.Integrity and conï¬dentiality in handling sensitive company ï¬nancial information.Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
