Overview: The Histotechnician Certified prepares patient tissue specimens and creates slides for microscopic examination and analysis by the pathologist. Working under minimal supervision, this role is responsible for managing daily workflow of tasks and activities in the surgical pathology area, performs difficult and complex procedures and reconciles the surgery schedule. They serve as the resource to providers to place appropriate testing orders and handling of excised tissues. Additionally, the technician coaches and trains new staff and educates histology students. Responsibilities: Helps perform procedures, including cutting, embedding, staining, special stains, and frozen sections, while upholding high-quality standards and meeting established benchmarks to ensure quantity and accuracy of specimens.Sorts specimens according to priority and difficulty of procedures and records in pathology log to ensure timely processing and accurate tracking of specimens in the pathology laboratory.Reviews the detection documents issues, forwarding them to the manager for resolution to ensure smooth laboratory operations and minimize potential disruptions in the diagnostic process.Detects problems and documents issues, forwarding them to the manager for resolution to ensure smooth laboratory operations and minimize potential disruptions in the diagnostic process.Leads inventory documentation of pathology supplies, equipment, and reagents used, and places orders for replacements as required to ensure an uninterrupted workflow for timely and reliable diagnostic results.Monitors pathology equipment functionality, performs maintenance, and conducts quality control procedures as required to maintain the accuracy and reliability of laboratory results.Collaborates effectively with pathologists, laboratory staff, and other healthcare professionals to promoting seamless communication and teamwork to facilitate accurate diagnoses and enhance patient care outcomes.Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications: EDUCATION:Required: Associate's Degree in Histotechnology OR other Associate's Degree that include 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of both chemistry and biology PLUS one year of full time histopathology laboratory experience. or waived to take the HT (ASCP) exam prior to rule change in 1995.EXPERIENCE:Required: 5+ years of experience in a Pathology or Academic Histology LaboratoryLICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING:Required: HT (ASCP)-Certified Histologic Technician ASCP | ASCP AMER SOCIETY FOR CLINICAL
