The Allen-Stevenson School in New York City seeks a dedicated, enthusiastic teacher of mathematics for a full-time position beginning in August 2025. Qualified candidates will have experience teaching mathematics and a demonstrated commitment to and love for working with middle school boys. The successful candidate is an experienced teacher who is knowledgeable about the teaching of mathematics, grades 5-8. The successful candidate can also build an inclusive classroom, integrate technology, collaborate within and across disciplines, and contribute energy and creativity to our community. An understanding and appreciation of how boys learn best, especially the role that personal connection plays, is essential.Reports to: Head of Upper Division and Mathematics Department ChairEducation: Masters degree in math or related field preferredExperience: 3 years of teaching at the middle school levelPRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:Support the school's educational mission and vision by challenging, engaging, and nurturing students toward deeper learningWork collaboratively with members of the math department under the leadership of the Department ChairImplement grade level curriculaA commitment to choosing and teaching texts representing multiple perspectivesDeveloping age-appropriate conceptual and computational skills while differentiating as neededFinding opportunities for cross-disciplinary connectionsManage classroom procedures and student behaviorOffer feedback to students on the clarity of their solutions and the quality of their written workUse a variety of approaches to problem solving, including inquiry-based methods and modeling practical applicationsNurture and prioritize meaningful connections with students so they feel welcome, valued, understood and seenConsider, attend to, and prioritize the emotional components of learning, and develop teaching and assessment strategies that account for theseUse technology effectively and appropriately to plan, enhance, and assess student learning in the classroom and for virtual lessons as necessaryAssess student performance using formative and summative tools, as well as rubrics, and provide regular academic updates, grades and comments for report cardsAdjust methods, content and assessments as needed to meet all student learning needs, academic and emotional, so every student has a chance to succeedServe as a grade-level advisor and interact with parents as appropriateCollaborate with division and team members with flexibility, creativity and humor to develop program and ensure student successSupervise clubs, class trips, daily recess and lunch dutiesCommunicate effectively and in a timely fashion, with students, parents/guardians, and colleaguesPerform additional duties and participate in the life of the schoolCompetencies, Skills, Knowledge, and Expectations:Ability to teach critical thinking, reading, writing, speaking and listening skillsDemonstrate familiarity with NCTM/CORE standards and how they align with your teaching approachAn understanding of student-centered, interdisciplinary and differentiated learningAbility to learn, grow professionally, and implement best practices; a dedication to lifelong learningCultural competence and a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belongingCollaboration skills and a desire to work with othersAbility to create and foster positive relationships with colleagues and studentsAn approach teaching and learning with a sense of humor, warmth of personality, and energyAn open-mind and flexible attitude to working with students and colleaguesThe budgeted salary for this role is between $80,000-$100,000, depending on experience.The Allen-Stevenson School actively seeks to forward the equity and diversity of our community in our admissions, programs and hiring.
