NYCSBUS (New York City School Bus Umbrella Services Inc.) is a not-for-profit corporation that provides school bus transportation services to New York City public and private school students, the majority of whom have Individual Education Plans. It operates approximately 800 school bus routes with a staff of approximately 1,800 people from six locations with a budget of $190 million. NYSCBUS's goal is to radically improve student bus transportation by innovating in all areas and by providing unprecedented transparency in bus operations to school districts that outsource this service.Reporting to the Director of Training and Safety, the Driver Trainer will be responsible for conducting in-person training, coursework, testing, behind the wheel training, and supervision of NYCSBUS Bus Drivers/Attendants in the instruction of safe, efficient, and proper operation of school buses. This person assists in the coordination and maintenance of training materials, testing, and employee records. Ensures that drivers are properly trained and full comprehension of material is achieved compliance. Provides coaching and mentoring for new drivers based upon key safety indicators.Primary ResponsibilitiesDeliver in-person training of New York required courses, including instruction in certification, vehicle components, first aid, emergency procedures, driving fundamentals, defensive driving, discipline of student passengers, and community relations.Track passing and failing scores and completion of coursework, tests, and the need to reschedule courses with retest attempts.Familiarize Bus Drivers with all classes of school buses and mechanics of brakes, control panels, GPS, radio communication, and emergency exits. Instruct required protocol of inclement weather driving or driving while in an unexpected emergency situation.Instruct driving staff on pre- and post-trip bus inspection processes as well as procedures for reporting issues and filing reports efficiently and accurately.Physically demonstrate safe and proper driving skills and/or review defensive driving features in a passenger bus with newly hired or returning, previously hired Bus Drivers.Provide behind the wheel training as needed to already hired and prospective Bus Drivers; along with frequent ride along driving performance reviews as needed.Assist in Student (S) and Passenger (P) endorsement trainingAssist with the preparation of training materials, binders, review guides, or grading of tests.Support depot teams in streamlining arrival and departure processes. Work with depot management to ensure safe pick up and drop off practices and an efficient and effective system not affected by car pool lanes or congested traffic per individual contracted agreements.Maintain records of driver activity, types of vehicles in use, license renewal dates, driving records, physicals, drug and alcohol testing results, etc. and communicate information to drivers and the Safety and Training Manager as needed.Depending on time of year, may be required to drive a route when not involved in primary training tasks.Education and/or ExperienceHigh School Diploma or GED.QualificationsClass B (or higher) CDL with student (S) and passenger (P) endorsementsTwo or more years of school bus driving training experience. This includes methods and approaches to school bus driving and risk mitigation Valid SBDI certification (19A Examiner or behind-the-wheel (BTW) experience preferredPossession of valid School Bus Driver Instructor certificationKnowledge of federal and state rules and regulations regarding safety and environmental issuesComputer literate with working knowledge of Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Proficient with Google Apps and other related softwareAbility to effectively prioritize tasks and manage time effectivelyGood verbal, written and relational communication skills, with ability to appropriately interact with employees of all levels including drivers, customers, senior management, client representatives, union officials and general publicFluent in English; bilingual in Spanish is strongly desiredPhysical and other RequirementsProlonged periods of sitting at a desk, working on a computer, and answering phone calls.Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times. Ability to travel to all NYCSBUS locationsMust be able to work safely in conditions where noise, moving machinery, exposure to dust, fumes and/or gas may be present.May be assigned shifts that fall outside of normally scheduled hours.During busy seasons such as the opening of the fall and summer school season, may be required to work longer than normally scheduled hours and might be assigned to depots other than the one they were hired for.
