We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Claims Manager to lead our claims department. Reporting directly to the President of UCS, this role is instrumental in managing all surety bond claims and serving as a key representative of the company in settlement negotiations. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in enhancing our claims processes, delivering exceptional service, and driving responsible growth within the surety industry.What You'll DoLeadership and StrategyOversee and mentor the claims team, including direct management of the existing Claims Manager, ensuring adherence to professional standards and development of key skills.Set the vision, strategy, objectives, and performance targets for the claims department, aligning them with company goals.Act as a trusted advisor to senior leadership, providing insights on claims trends in the surety industry, risk management, and compliance.Claims ManagementManage and resolve all claims ranging from low intensity to more complex surety bond claims from initial intake to settlement.Travel to and represent UCS in meetings with counter parties during negotiations, court proceedings, and settlements, alleviating the President's involvement in these matters.Develop and maintain best practices for claims handling, ensuring compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations.Communication and ReportingProvide clear, professional, and effective communication in both written and verbal formats.Establish regular reporting processes for claims activities, including trends and key performance indicators, to support underwriting and finance functions.Stakeholder CollaborationBuild and maintain collaborative relationships with internal teams, external partners, and industry stakeholders to enhance capabilities and resolve claims effectively.Guide the development of business cases for strategic initiatives, ensuring alignment with company objectives.What We're Looking ForMinimum Requirements:Bachelor's degree required7+ years of experience managing surety bond claims of all kinds (e.g., construction, non-construction, compliance, financial guarantee) in the surety industryDemonstrated ability to lead teams and manage direct reports, fostering a collaborative and professional environment.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate complicated cases and develop effective resolutions.Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of conveying complex information clearly and professionally.Familiarity with local, state, and federal regulations relevant to the surety and insurance industries.Willingness to travel for client meetings and claim mitigation as needed.This position will report into the Boston office four days per week.Preferred Qualifications:A law degree (JD) or equivalent experience in legal aspects of claims handling.AFSB (Associate in Fidelity and Surety Bonding) certification, a plusProven experience negotiating and resolving claims directly with principals and obligees.Based in the Boston area, with the ability to report to the office at least 3 days per weekWhy Join Us?At UCS, we pride ourselves on breaking old norms and fostering innovation within the insurance industry.
