Distinguishing Characteristics of WorkThis is skilled work of a Journeymans level, which involves repair, and maintenance of motorized equipment. Under general supervision performs mechanical repair on motorized gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and related equipment.Essential Examples of DutiesThe following illustrates examples of some of the essential duties and responsibilities of a Mechanic III. There may be other essential functions, not listed below, in order to accomplish the tasks as presented by the Director of Fleet. Troubleshoots, repair gasoline and diesel engines, major assemblies and components in automobiles, motorcycles, trucks, tractors, trenching machines, air compressors and other mechanical equipment. Removes, rebuilds and/or replaces complex components such as engines, transmissions, differentials, axle assemblies, power steering units, brakes, cooling systems, wheels and bearings, hydraulic and electrical systems, generators, starters, drive train components, fuel systems, etc.Performs tune-ups on motorized equipment. Maintains and insures proper handling and storage of assigned tools, equipment, materials, and work in progress. May be required to supervise lower-level Mechanics in the absence of a Maintenance Supervisor I. Performs other related work as required.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesA thorough knowledge of the mechanical repair of all types of construction, automotive, transit and other motorized equipment. A working knowledge of the theory and operation of internal combustion and diesel engines. Ability to diagnose mechanical defects.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The following are some of the physical requirements associated with this position. Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.Work involves working indoors and outdoors in inclement weather conditions.Work involves sitting and standing for long periods of time. Work involves frequent typing, walking and bending, lifting and stooping for short periods of time.Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of up to 30 pounds.Minimum Training and ExperienceEnglish and Spanish speaking is preferred.Must be ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certified. Graduated from high school or vocational school, supplemented with courses in automotive repair, diesel engine repair, electronics, hydraulics and/or any combination of the above. Three years full time paid experience as a mechanic.Must be certified in the following areas: Engine Repair, Suspension and Steering, Brakes, Hydraulics and Air, Heating and A/C, Engine Performance, Lite Vehicle Diesel Engines.
