What Youll DoEnglish teachers at Avenues help students become skilled, passionate, and joyful readers and writers. Students will read from diverse literature. They will write frequently for different purposes and will continue to develop their vocabulary, speaking, listening, writing and viewing skills. In grades 6-8, we employ a range of instructional modes. To support students, teachers design mini-lessons to teach targeted, dynamic literacy strategies, and hold reading and writing conferences with individual students. Teachers use discussions to foster skills of listening, accountable talk, and collaboration. English teachers also work closely with teachers of visual art, science, and the World Course to design project-based, interdisciplinary learning experiences.More broadly, all teachers at Avenues:ensure students achieve key learning outcomes by targeting instruction to address individual student needscollaboratively plan discipline-based and interdisciplinary units and projects using backward design frameworks, such as Understanding by Designco-construct with students a classroom environment that establishes high standards fosters a sense of belonging and upholds our founding values of welcome, safety, and respectpractice cultural competence in the classroom and workplaceinspire trust and confidence among guardians and families through regular, proactive communicationcontribute to the broader community of our NYC campus and global networkWhat Youll BringEnglish teachers at Avenues bring all or most of the following:several years of teaching experience and an exemplary track record of student learningknowledge of a wide range of texts that offer a representation of diverse voices and perspectives (i.e., both "window" and "mirror" texts)expertise in the teaching of listening, speaking, reading, and writingexperience with multiple pedagogical methods, including the workshop model and independent reading programsproficiency in backwards planning and lesson design frameworks, such as Understanding by Designexperience with, or interest in, interdisciplinary, project-based teachingintellectual curiosity and the humility to reflect on, and continually grow in, your teaching practicea voracious appetite for reading and a habitual desire to writecommitment to creating a culture of equity and inclusiona strong sense of personal responsibility for the success of every studentMore InformationThis role is for a temporary full time leave replacement estimated to take place between January 13 to April 6th. This role is compensated on a salary basis prorated for the duration of the assignment.If hired for this position, the annual compensation range is $72,000- $110,000 depending on skills and experience. Leave positions for a duration of less than 3 months are not benefits eligible.
