NIOSH is a research agency that focuses on the study of worker safety and health, and empowering employers and workers to create safe and healthy workplaces. A priority at NIOSH is to develop new knowledge in the field of occupational safety and health and to transfer that knowledge into practice. To do this, NIOSH conducts work-related research and makes recommendations to prevent worker injury and illness. The work done at NIOSH impacts every segment of the American workforce.PositionThis position is in the Risk Evaluation Branch (REB), Division of Science Integration (DSI) located at the NIOSH regional office in Cincinnati, OH. DSI uses a public health approach to develop and transfer information and provide recommendations to prevent occupational deaths, injuries, and diseases. The Division also conducts research, synthesizes scientific information, creates policy, technical and educational documents, and develops and disseminates targeted occupational safety and health information.This full-time Associate Service Fellowship is a temporary appointment that lasts two years but may be extended. The fellowship appointments are non-status and non-permanent. U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and non-U.S. citizens are eligible. Salary will be based on the candidate's education and experience and will include benefits per OPM requirements. Relocation expenses are not provided.Job DescriptionThe successful applicant will work with a multidisciplinary team of researchers, and other researchers and scientists performing occupational safety and health research. The branch is responsible for conducting quantitative risk assessments of workplace hazards; and evaluates data on the toxicity of chemicals and build statistical models to predict risks to workers. Scientists in the branch are also actively involved in risk assessment methods research and NIOSH science policy determinations.DutiesThe incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:Conduct quantitative human-health risk assessments using techniques such as physiologically based pharmacokinetic modeling and/or computational toxicologyContribute to peer-reviewed journal articles, technical reports, and NIOSH policyData analysis and interpretation of the research findings; andConduct internal and external presentations of the research findings.Basic QualificationsEducation:Degree Experience: Degree in Toxicology or an appropriate discipline of the biological, medical, or veterinary sciences that included at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, biochemistry, or physiology, and 12 semester hours in toxicology.In addition to the basic education requirement, applicants must have a master's degree in a scientific field.In addition to meeting the above requirements, applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service.-OR-Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.Note: Degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.Highly qualified candidates would possess the following:Master's degree or Ph.D. in toxicology or related disciplines appropriate to the position;Advance knowledge of statistical principles and techniques;Ability run advanced statistical models and to interpret the results and understand the limitations;Strong written and verbal communication skills; andAbility to work independently and as a member of a team.Basic RequirementsBoth US citizens and non-US citizens are eligible to applyNote: Non-US citizens meeting the above degree and specified specialized experience requirements are eligible for noncompetitive appointments under this appointing authority.
