We are working with an elite, national law firm seeking a Conflicts Governance Attorney to join its attorney team. The Conflicts Governance Attorney will direct and conduct specific processes in the firm's Governance Department, including timely and thorough review, identification, and resolution of conflicts of interest; preparation of conflicts waivers; review of engagement letters and outside guidelines; review of new vendor contracts; and performance of other risk management related tasks. The person holding the position will report directly to the Associate Director of Governance and will have significant interactions with the firm's General Counsel, partners, and other personnel within various departments of the firm.Salary is expected to be within the $141,000 - $180,000 range. The position is available offsite in Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Washington, DC. with some In-office presence, as necessary. California attorney licensure is required; but attorneys licensed in other states will be considered, if they are willing and able to take and pass the California Bar Examination within a year of hire. Benefits information is available from the employer.RESPONSIBILITIESAssists with the clearance of new hire candidates, including the performance of conflicts analysis and resolution, the review of reports submitted by Governance Analysts, and the escalation of items to the firm's General Counsel and partners, as appropriate.Drafts language in waiver and engagement letters to ensure that it adequately addresses conflicts and engagement issues.Reviews new vendor agreements and ensures that they comply with the firm's standard terms and conditions.Reviews client outside counsel guidelines and engagement agreements to identify deviations from the firm's policies and drafts appropriate responses to the deviations.Develops internal policies, procedures, guidelines, and best practices with respect to information governance issues, including security and privacy issues.Leads and supports risk management related projects and initiatives.Maintains up-to-date knowledge of both the American Bar Association (ABA) Model Rules of Professional Conduct, as adopted in each state in which the firm maintains an office, and the jurisdictional differences in all states and practice areas in which the firm conducts business.Assists with the daily operation and maintenance of the firm's internal legal holds and collection, as well as with the preservation and destruction of documents.Advises attorneys and professionals on all aspects of the firm's governance policies (e.g., regarding retention, disposition, conflicts) and integrates feedback into policy and process adjustments, as necessary.Ensures compliance with firm wide processes related to audit letters, outside counsel guidelines, conflicts checks, and new business intake.Serves as the escalation point for Governance Analysts and troubleshoots conflicts issues to resolution.Performs legal research, including review of case law and jurisdictional issues related to conflicts clearance, lateral hiring, ethical walls, records disposition, and related issues.Performs other duties as assigned.QUALIFICATIONSMinimum five (5) years of law firm conflicts research and analysis experienceAdvanced ability to be proactive and analytical, exhibiting excellent critical thinking skillsAbility to work in a fast paced environment and to interact professionally with othersExcellent attention to detailStrong communication skillsAbility to deliver consistently excellent customer serviceProficiency using MS Office Suite, with advanced skills in Excel and PowerPointProficiency using risk/governance software (e.g., InTapp Conflicts/Intake or 3E/Elite Enterprise, Aderant, Legal Key, Varonis, FileTrail)Proficiency using document management systemsProficiency using Boolean search terms and connectorsJuris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited educational institutionAdmitted to the California Bar, active and in good standing, ORAdmitted to the Bar of another jurisdiction, active and in good standing, with willingness and ability to take and pass the California Bar within one (1) year.OTHER DETAILSalary: $141,000 - $180,000Benefits: Information will be supplied by the employer.Physical Demands: Writing, typing, reading, speaking, hearing, seeing, sitting, bending, reaching, lifting up to 25 lbs.Working Conditions: Offsite but, when in-office, a quiet office environment in a high-rise building, seated the majority of the timeABOUT THE FIRMHas received the American Lawyer's A-List rating since its inception in 2004, including nine years in the top spot.Strives to hire only the most qualified and creative lawyers: roughly eighty percent (80%) of the firm's attorneys served as law clerks to federal or state judges and sixteen were clerks to U.S. Supreme Court Justices.Recruits and retains the best professional staff talent to support the firm's attorneys with a focus on service and excellence.Has a full spectrum of functional positions including information technology, information security, accounting, human resources, legal support, and marketing positions.Is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate in employment on the basis of race, including but not limited to hair texture and protective hairstyles (for example, braids, locks, and twists), color, ethnicity, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding and medical conditions related to pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding, marital or domestic partner status, parental or family care status, national origin, ancestry, age, sexual orientation, disability or medical condition, genetic characteristic, political affiliation, military or veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state or local law.Maintains policy to prohibit discrimination, unlawful harassment (including sexual harassment), and retaliation.
