The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (the "Port Authority") Law Department seeks an attorney with experience working for or with federal regulatory agencies, especially the Department of Transportation administrations or the Federal Maritime Commission as well as New York/New Jersey state transportation agencies and their municipal counterparts in the Port Authority regional area. The successful candidate will be able to interact with regulators and advocate as necessary for the Port Authority in relevant regulatory environments. Familiarity with government functioning and procedures is critical. This attorney will work to ensure that the Port Authority remains in compliance with all relevant laws and regulations and will develop the ability to represent the Port Authority's interests with its regulators. The Port Authority is required to comply with federal regulations which govern its transit operations and to operate in accordance with the assurances made to each of the federal agencies who have provided funding for its facilities. These agencies include the Federal Aviation Administration, the Federal Transit Administration, the Federal Highway Administration, the Federal Railroad Administration and the Federal Maritime Commission, among others. In addition, the Port Authority is subject, in certain instances, to the laws of the States of New York and New Jersey, the signatories to its 1921 Charter. The Port Authority has on staff a dedicated and talented team of government relations professionals; it is anticipated that the person filling this position will work closely with that team as well as the line departments who manage our airport, ports, bridges and tunnels and rail facilities. This position reports to the First Deputy General Counsel. ResponsibilitiesThe selected candidate will be responsible for performing duties including, but not limited to, the following: Provide the Port Authority with representation, counsel, and advice on statutory and regulatory compliance, including review of all proposed and newly introduced legislation and regulations for the Federal government and regulatory agencies thereof. Ensure the Port Authority conducts its business in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.Manage outside counsel services, including legal spend and legal fee approvals.Advise senior management on legal matters pertaining to the Port Authority. Interact with the agency's government relations function in outreach to federal regulatory agencies.Stay abreast of new laws, legal decisions, legal and legislative actions that affect the Port Authority and advise senior staff of their implications. Qualifications:Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:Law degree from a top tier or highly regarded law school.Member of the Bar in good standing in relevant state and federal jurisdictions.Minimum of five years experience relevant legal experience with emphasis on federal regulatory gained through a combination of major law firm experience and experience with governmental clientele.
