Job Title: Director of SafetyJob Overview: Director of Safety to lead and develop the safety program at our small manufacturing facility with operations in both the US and Canada. The ideal candidate will be responsible for building and implementing a comprehensive safety program, ensuring compliance with both US and Canadian safety regulations, and setting strategic safety goals to foster a culture of safety across the organization.The Director of Safety will oversee all aspects of workplace safety, including risk management, regulatory compliance, safety training, and continuous improvement, while working closely with senior leadership to drive safety initiatives aligned with company objectives.Key Responsibilities:Safety Program Development & Management:Develop, implement, and continuously improve a comprehensive safety program for the manufacturing facility.Build safety policies and procedures to ensure a safe work environment in compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations in the US and Canadian safety standards (e.g., CSA, WorkSafeBC).Establish and lead a safety committee, ensuring representation from various departments and fostering employee engagement in safety initiatives.Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management:Ensure the organization's operations comply with federal, state/provincial, and local safety regulations in both the US and Canada.Conduct regular audits to assess safety risks and implement corrective actions to mitigate hazards and ensure compliance with applicable regulations.Stay current with OSHA, CSA, WorkSafeBC, and other relevant regulations, ensuring the facility is up-to-date on all changes.Lead safety inspections and risk assessments, identifying potential hazards and ensuring that corrective measures are promptly addressed.Safety Training & Education:Develop and deliver safety training programs tailored to the needs of the facility, including onboarding for new employees, ongoing training for existing staff, and specialized training for high-risk operations.Track employee safety training progress and compliance, maintaining accurate records and ensuring certifications are up to date.Create and deliver training materials to promote safety awareness and improve workplace safety behaviors.Incident Investigation & Reporting:Lead investigations into workplace incidents, near-misses, and accidents to identify root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.Report safety incidents to appropriate regulatory agencies, ensuring compliance with reporting requirements in both the US and Canada.Maintain incident logs and create reports for senior management to monitor safety performance and track safety metrics.Strategic Safety Goals & Performance Metrics:Collaborate with senior leadership to define safety-related strategic goals and initiatives that align with the company's overall business objectives.Develop key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness of the safety program and track progress toward safety goals.Drive a safety-first culture by promoting proactive safety practices, improving safety awareness, and integrating safety into daily operations.Continuous Improvement & Safety Culture:Champion a safety-first culture, encouraging all employees to actively participate in maintaining a safe working environment.Collaborate with leadership and department managers to identify areas for continuous improvement in safety practices and initiatives.Implement and promote employee safety recognition programs to encourage safe behavior and initiatives.Cross-Border Coordination:Oversee the safety program for both US and Canadian operations, ensuring consistency and alignment while addressing the unique regulatory requirements of each country.Provide guidance on safety compliance and best practices to facility managers and employees in both locations.Foster collaboration between the US and Canadian teams, ensuring that safety practices are standardized, where applicable, across both countries.Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in Safety Management, Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field.Proven experience (5+ years) in a safety management role, preferably in a manufacturing or industrial setting.In-depth knowledge of OSHA regulations (US), CSA standards, and Canadian provincial safety regulationsAlberta Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) is the main governing body for the province on all safety in workplaces.Workers' Compensation Board - Alberta (WCB-Alberta)Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS)Safety certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or equivalent are preferred.Strong understanding of risk management, incident investigation, and safety compliance.Ability to create and deliver effective safety training programs for diverse employee groups.Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to interact with all levels of the organization.Strong leadership skills, with a focus on teamwork, collaboration, and driving cultural change.Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects effectively.
