Job Overview:The Senior Vice President of Communications and External Affairs will lead and oversee all internal and external communication strategies for the organization regarding our public policy advocacy. This role is part of the CEO's executive leadership team and is responsible for shaping and promoting the organization's brand statewide as a leading voice of the California business community on issues of public policy, managing media relations, driving organization messaging, and ensuring alignment with organizational goals. The Sr. VP of Communications and External Affairs will work closely with the executive leadership team to enhance the organization's reputation, engage stakeholders, and support overall business objectives.Key Responsibilities:Strategic Communications Leadership:Develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy aligned with the CalChamber's vision, mission, and public policy objectives.Provide leadership in public relations, corporate communications, and develop/implement a digital media strategy to elevate the organization's brand awareness, reputation, and leadership.Collaborate with EVP of Policy and Director of Marketing to ensure messaging is consistent and supports organization's goals.Media Relations:Build and maintain strong relationships with key media outlets, journalists, and influencers.Lead proactive media outreach to secure press coverage and manage media inquiries.Develop and oversee communications programming to support policy advocacyPrepare CEO, EVP of Policy, and policy advocates for media interviews, briefings, and speaking engagements.Establishes a Rapid Response Infrastructure and Crisis Management plan/protocols for major issue at CalChamber itself and be a counselor/advisor to member companies.Works with EVP Policy to manage consultants for Public AffairsSocial Media & Digital Communications:Oversee social media strategies, ensuring consistent, on-brand messaging across CalChamber platforms.Drive digital content strategy, working closely with marketing teams to enhance online presence.Measure and report on communications and social media impact, adjusting strategies as needed.External AffairsOversee External Affairs team, which manages organization's relationships with Local Chambers, Regional Business organizations and Strategic PartnershipsLeads efforts to mobilize small businesses in grassroots advocacy at the State Capitol, to improve California's business and jobs climate.Brand Management & Messaging:Manage and monitor the development and execution of internal and external communications materials, including press releases, speeches, presentations, and digital content.Monitor and oversee the external public policy positions to ensure messaging and content are consistent with organization's goals and mission.Monitor industry trends and competitor activity to adjust strategies accordingly.Internal Communications:In partnership with the VP of Human Resources, EVP of Policy, and CFO, develop and manage a robust internal communication strategy to ensure employees are informed, engaged, and aligned with the organization's objectives.Foster a culture of transparency and open communication within the organization.Oversee employee newsletters, internal announcements, and other communication channels.Team Leadership & Development:Lead and mentor a team of communications professionals, including media relations, content creators, and digital experts.Foster a collaborative and high-performing team culture.Set key performance goals and provide professional development opportunities.Budget Management:Develop and manage the communications department budget.Ensure resources are allocated efficiently and effectively to meet business objectivesQualifications:Education:Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or related field. A Master's degree is a plus.Experience:10+ years of experience in corporate communications, public relations, politics, or a related field.5+ years in a leadership role, with proven experience in managing a communications team.Strong track record of successfully managing media relations and corporate messaging.Experience in a fast-paced, high-growth environment is preferred.Skills & Competencies:Excellent written and verbal communication skills.Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities.Experience in managing, mentoring, and inspiring a team.Proficiency in social media platforms, digital communication tools, and analytics.Deep understanding of brand management and corporate reputation building.Ability to work in a collaborative environmentWorking Conditions:This is a full-time executive position, typically requiring flexibility and availability outside of regular business hours.Occasional travel may be required for media events, conferences, or corporate functions.Hybrid work option, required to be in office Mon- Wed.
