Job Summary: Signal Mutual is the premier Longshore mutual in the US. The AVP, Controller will play a critical role in ensuring that the Company's financial data is timely and accurately recorded and in compliance with US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP). This role is based in South Norwalk, CT and reports to the VP, Group Controller. We value culture and flexibility, and our organization has adopted a hybrid working model that will be discussed as part of this role.General Duties:Manage the quarterly and monthly close, ensuring all reporting deadlines are metPrepare robust balance sheet and income statement analytics for management reviewEnsure all intercompany balances are properly reconciled and eliminatedPerform account reconciliations for all general ledger accounts under your responsibility, including both technical (insurance, reinsurance, investments) and non-technical accountsMonitor new accounting standards to ensure compliance with US GAAP accounting, and assist with documentation of the Mutual's positionsSupport the preparation of financial statement disclosuresAct as one of the main points of contact for the annual audit process, providing accurate and detailed documentation to external auditors Own the risk management and analysis of our Members' financial position and the required Members' security; includes the evaluation and monitoring of the security levels and quality of the instruments (SSAT, LOCs, Bonds) Prepare billings for certain Members of the MutualAssist with various Management and Board reporting, as neededProactively identify and implement process improvements in financial reporting and accounting functionsBuild detailed reference and process documentation for accounting functionsSupport system implementation or other project work, as necessaryKnowledge, skills and abilities:Knowledge of industry-standard accounting principles (US GAAP and US STAT), best practices and proceduresExperience with process documentation and internal controlsAbility to read and interpret accounting rules and guidanceExcellent written and presentation skills, both verbal and writtenAbility to work independently and manage time effectively to meet deadlinesAbility to work together in a cooperative spirit to best serve the interests of the MutualEducation and Experience:Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance is required. CPA and/or Masters preferred, but not required.8+ years of relevant accounting/financial analysis required.4+ years of experience working in the insurance industry is required. Experience with Workday or Phinsys is a plusExpert user of the Microsoft suite of products, including Excel, Word, and Outlook
