The Department of Microbiology and Plant Pathology at the University of California, Riverside invites applicants for a full-time Junior Specialist in Plant Pathology to conduct applied research in the Vegetable and Strawberry Pathology Lab. Our Lab's goal is to improve the economic, environmental, and social sustainability of vegetable and strawberry production in California by addressing disease challenges facing these crops. The Junior Specialist will play an important role in the research and extension efforts of our Lab. The position is full-time with an initial appointment for one year, with potential for extension and advancement dependent on performance and availability of funds. The position is available immediately. The Junior Specialist will work semi-independently under the direction of Dr. Alex Putman, with a portion of the time under the guidance of a postdoctoral researcher.The current base pay range for this position is $53,100 - $56,600.Research (90%)The Junior Specialist will perform greenhouse and experiments to help understand plant pathogens and the diseases they cause and to assist development of improved and innovative ways to manage them. The main responsibilities will be: identification of pathogens from diseased plants; performing greenhouse, growth chamber, and lab experiments to characterize the pathogenicity or other traits of pathogens; and quantification of fungal pathogens from soil. Specific tasks include culturing pathogens, DNA extraction, standard and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR), sequence analysis, inoculum preparation and infection, plant maintenance, and data collection, maintenance, and analysis. Other duties include: assisting with field experiments as needed; supervising undergraduate student assistants; and general laboratory management and maintenance responsibilities including culture collection maintenance, media preparation, and ordering supplies.Professional Competence and Activity (5%)The Junior Specialist will participate in searching the scientific literature, designing experiments, interpreting results, preparing presentations for various audiences, and preparing manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals. University and Public Service (5%)The Junior specialist will provide leadership in maintaining a safe workplace, participate in or lead mentorship of lab personnel including undergraduate students, and contribute service to the University and agriculture industry stakeholders as appropriate.Basic qualifications for this position that must be met by the date of application include: B.S. degree in a biological science fieldKnowledge in aseptic techniques, microbiology, and molecular techniques (DNA extraction and standard PCR)Ability to efficiently follow research protocols and instructions, document experiments, adhere to safety procedures, and maintain a safe working environment Excellent organizational skills and a strong attention to detail, with the ability to multitask and adapt to changing prioritiesAbility to actively participate in a mutually-supportive and respectful team environmentProficiency with word processing and spreadsheet software (Microsoft and Google)Excellent written and verbal communication skills in EnglishAbility to occasionally work outside normal hoursAbility to occasionally assist with planting, harvesting, or sampling of field experiments on an as needed basisPossession or ability to obtain a State of California driver's license.Ability to lift and carry 40 pounds and work outdoors in warm weatherPreferred qualifications for this position include: Expertise in aseptic techniquesExperience with molecular techniques (DNA extraction and standard PCR) and microscopy Knowledge and experience with plant pathology or mycologyWork experience in a biological research laboratoryExperience growing plantsAbility to train other team members on standard lab techniquesAdvancement through the Specialist ranks at the University of California is through a series of structured, merit-based evaluations, occurring every 2-3 years, each of which includes substantial peer input.To apply, submit: 1) a cover letter addressing your interest and qualifications for the position; 2) a current Curriculum Vitae; and 3) contact information for three references to Dr. Alexander Putman at .
