The Lower School is a critical bridge in a school where each division offers an age-appropriate program and where "tradition connects us and innovation propels us." Viewpoint is affiliated with the Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning as well as Challenge Success, and each of our Lower School teachers, assistant teachers, and administrators are trained in Responsive Classroom to ensure that each Viewpoint student's voice is heard and valued.The Lower School has long been respected for understanding the developmental needs of the age group, for encouraging the individual, and for its dedicated faculty. Lower School students participate in a wide range of performing and fine arts, science and technology, and a strong world languages program that continues the study of Spanish and French. Mathematics instruction focuses on an understanding of fundamental concepts, hands-on activities, and the integration of technology. The four c's of collaboration, critical thinking, communication and creativity are evident across the Lower School curriculum and are certainly evident in the sequential and skill building of the English program which fosters an appreciation of literature and helps students to "recognize and value the artistry of language."Viewpoint is currently seeking a Lower School Head who will embrace the opportunities and challenges of this leadership role, building upon the legacy of trusted leadership of a veteran 25-year leader. More specifically, the School seeks a new leader who has:Deep understanding of Lower School culture: Viewpoint's next LS division head should understand the philosophy and ethos of a high-functioning Lower School, a leader who will know students well and develop a strong community among all constituencies in the division. The next division head should demonstrate a deep understanding of the arc of development of LS students and the appropriate academic and character goals for this age group.A forward-looking approach to education: Viewpoint seeks a division head who brings a thoughtful lens to the academic, social-emotional and extracurricular programs in the division, who can fulfill Viewpoint's vision of "a school where tradition connects us and innovation propels us." The next Lower School Head needs a firm grasp on effective pedagogy and research-based instructional strategies as well as what the division needs to move forward, from scheduling requirements to technology expectations for the division. The School is looking for a leader who will be innovative within the parameters of the identity and program of Viewpoint, leading the division's discernment of opportunities for change and growth.Strong communication and process protocols: A proven track record on successful change management, the ability to demonstrate a caring and respectful approach, and a commitment to clear and impactful follow-through will be key for this position. The implementation of new initiatives needs thorough articulation and organization in addition to inspiring and soliciting input from the experienced faculty in the division. The combination of attention to detail alongside the ability to build strong collegial relationships and delegate effectively will be key.Effective collaboration and leadership skills: The Lower School division head plays a critical role in the smooth running of Viewpoint as a TK-12 school, helping with the articulation and coordination of how the Lower School functions within a TK-12 school. A systems thinker, the Lower School Head is a motivated and motivating team builder, who can both lead the Lower School team and its program and ensure the alignment and operation of the division with the broader organization. The new division head will contribute collaboratively to the work of the other divisions in the school and will support and help to implement all-school initiatives.Positive personal qualities: Personable and approachable.
