Kickstart your 2025 with a fresh opportunity - we're hiring for an attorney specializing in design professional (architects and engineers) representation that could be your perfect next step! If you have a background representing design professionals or handling construction litigation matters, we want to talk to you.About Us:Since 1979, Murtaugh Treglia Stern & Deily LLP (MTSD) has been one of California's preeminent law firms representing architects, engineers, and other design professionals. Our practice is primarily litigation and largely on the defense side, but also includes plaintiffs' cases plus contract negotiations and general business counseling for the A/E (architect and engineer) community. Clients include boutique architecture studios and national design firms, plus a range of contractors and property owners. The Firm's partners regularly lecture and present for the American Institute of Architects, and we represent clients involved in a wide variety of projects from high-end custom residences and retail to healthcare and major public works and transportation hubs. We pride ourselves on having a sophisticated practice where our cases are unique with intriguing problems that demand novel and detailed solutions. This is not your run of the mill construction litigation firm.If you have at least three years of litigation experience in California state courts and are interested in growing as part of this practice, read on.How We Can Help:We understand that quality service comes from quality professionals, and we are committed to your development both as a legal professional and as a member of our Firm. To that end, we provide direct partner-associate mentoring, regular group training sessions, monthly Firm dinners, and - for those who may be interested - roster spots on our softball team. We also provide one experienced legal secretary for every two to three attorneys, plus office staff and paralegal support, and the opportunity to work remotely on an as-needed basis.MTSD is also a highly diversified firm. While this specific opening is for an associate dedicated to construction litigation for design professionals, you will have the opportunity to meet and learn from attorneys in other fields such as business litigation, trusts and probate, trade secrets and employment, and corporate transactions.Base salary ranges between $125,000 and $180,000, depending on experience, with bonus opportunities based on your performance. We also provide a 401(k) plan with three percent annual matching, and comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance. How You Can Help:Our ideal candidate will have at least some background in design professional and/or construction litigation, and we encourage candidates to highlight experience with construction litigation and design professionals in their application materials. But we will also consider applicants with other types of litigation experience. The most important thing is an interest in the architects / engineering field, and the ability to work collaboratively with our clients to understand their unique (and, often, highly technical) issues.Other requirements include:Attention to detail: we pride ourselves on exceptional service and our "Care for the Client" ethos. To meet those standards and have long-term success in the Firm, candidates should have great attention to detail and take pride in the quality of their work. We are in the business of effectively solving our clients' problems, not just billing hours.Strong communication and negotiations skills.Exceptional legal writing ability (see #1 above). Please submit at least one writing sample (ideally two) with your application. The best writing samples will help your reader to quickly understand the context and main point of your argument.Admission to the California State Bar.At MTSD, our associates are treated like real attorneys, not just trainees. Associates will have the opportunity to work closely with partners and clients through all levels of the litigation process, from the initial case intake and evaluation through trial (and, occasionally, post-trial proceedings). Every associate is expected to prepare a case evaluation for each file they handle which includes a realistic plan of action. Associates are also expected to handle pleadings and discovery as necessary to follow through on that plan. Other responsibilities will depend on experience level, but our associates will not be stuck doing document review for days on end. Once having proven your abilities, you will be entrusted with drafting advanced motions, arguing in court, taking and defending depositions, directly advising clients about case strategy, independently attending mediations and negotiating case resolutions, and second-chairing trial. We want our associates to advance their professional skills and handle more advanced matters so they can continue to improve those skills. We want associates who want to represent their clients, to take their clients' problems as their own, and want to truly practice law - not just bill the file.If you want to move your career forward and become a better attorney in a demanding and interesting field of practice, submit your resume today.
