Our robot will disrupt flexible endoscopy and set a new standard in outcomes for decades to come.TITLESenior/Staff Optical Systems EngineerPOSITION SUMMARY:We are seeking a Senior/Staff Optical Systems Engineer to join our dynamic team. This role will be pivotal in designing, verifying, and validating our next-generation ultra-miniature real-time low-latency video cameras, fiber-optic illumination, displays, and surgical image quality for our breakthrough medical robots. This person will design optical systems in collaboration with other engineering teams, interface with clinical engineers and visiting physicians to assure clinical needs are met, and drive through to completion of design verification.The ideal candidate will act with passion and intensity in a medical device start-up that is fast paced and collaborative and display the ability to perform to the requirements outlined below. This role offers the opportunity to gain breadth and responsibility for candidates coming from image science, systems engineering, test engineering, design engineering or other roles.ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Take ownership of optics integration design and manufacturability for our next-generation endoscope, solving critical challenges within a complex development process for a revolutionary new medical device.Lead redesign of our next-generation multi-color fiber-optic illumination system, including multimode fiber bundles, light-spreading optics, and optical and mechanical coupling Own relationship with mechanical and process R&D and manufacturing teams integrating camera, fibers and illumination optics, window, seals, and couplings into a validated, cost-effective assemblyDrive verification and validation testing on accelerated path to clinical trialsSubject matter expert for first human trials including camera, illumination, displays, and image qualityLead implementation of parallel new ultrawide angle camera architecture, owning the design of vision fixturing and test protocols, and managing optical suppliers through build and test of custom camera assembliesREQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Optics, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field.5+ years experience (or 2+ year with M.S., or new Ph.D.)Proficient in SolidWorks, Zemax or equivalent, Imatest or equivalentSolid experience prototyping, assembling, and testing miniature optical and mechanical componentsSolid knowledge of photometry theory and practiceProficient in standard image quality metrics like AF test targets, MTF, depth of field, field of view, luminance vs. color, color accuracy, and stray-light testingPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:Experience with designs and suppliers for high-volume optical injection-molded parts, preferably with complex challenges including side-action molds and multi-shot moldingExperience with Linux systems and Python scripting, ideally including tools for image-processing (for ex OpenCV, PIL, Numpy, ffmpeg or equivalent) for image-quality verificationExperience with medical device engineering and medical design controlsSolid experience creating and documenting test procedures for high-compliance fields like medical, avionics, automotive, or semiconductorsAwareness of how image quality is influenced by video processing concepts like color spaces, pixel formats and Yuv chroma sampling, standard video codecsAwareness of the effects camera-control techniques including autoexposure and white balance, and image enhancement techniques like tone-mapping, sharpening, and denoisingTriton Robotics is located in Burlingame, CA, near the Millbrae Caltrain and BART Station.Our job titles may span more than one career level. The starting base salary for this role is between $180,000 and $210,000 depending on experience. The actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, such as: education, training, transferable skills, work experience, business needs, and location. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
