The Director is accountable for assuring the provision of effective operations encompassing multiple responsibilities which include: operational and strategic collaboration and execution of medical operations of the Emergency Department, and Hospital Medicine, management of operations including financial performance, compliance with revenue cycle management, and fostering of interdisciplinary, collaborative relationships within the units of accountability and the organization. The Director has primary responsibility for Emergency Department and Hospital Medicine operations, and is open to occasional evenings and weekends. The Director will work collaboratively with the Medical Directors and nurse leaders of both programs. This is a highly visible position that has administrative authority to work with entities across Sturdy Health in order to meet established accountabilities.Job DescriptionReports to: Executive Vice President & Chief Operating OfficerEducation/Training: Master's Degree in Business Administration, Healthcare-related field (5 years of management level experience) required.Required Qualifications and Skills: Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of related experience in area of responsibility, including physician/providers relations. Three (3) to five (5) years of progressive management experience with increasing scope of responsibility preferred. Emergency Services experience preferred.Skills: Excellent oral and written communication skills required. Demonstrates results oriented leadership. Must be well organized, able to set priorities, work independently and function as an effective team member. Proficient in computer systems and software applications required. Essential Job Functions: Clinical Practice/Patient CareProvides leadership and direction to ensure the successful operations, quality and safety of both Emergency Departments and Hospital Medicine.Develops and sustains an environment in the Emergency Department and Hospital Medicine that supports excellence and innovation in department operations and patient care through assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programs and standards that support positive patient care outcomes.Supports organizational mission statement, values and goals and role models to staff and others.In conjunction with department medical directors and nurse leaders develop departmental goals and objectives with input from staff and providers to support the organizational and divisional goals and objectives.Maintains a safe and caring environment for patients and significant others that is conducive to positive health teaching and health maintenance.Assures that care provided to patients is consistent with multi-disciplinary plans of care.Supports and facilitates evidence based clinical practice.Maintains an ongoing departmental based quality plan with goals consistent with the Sturdy Health Strategic Plan.In conjunction with department medical directors and nurse leaders develops and implements unit specific standards and policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of care and services.Continuously assesses and improves assigned departments' performance consistent with regional and national standards.Operational ManagementAssures appropriate utilization of all available resources to provide quality, cost-effective patient care.Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills by communicating and cooperating, with clinical staff.Understands financial metrics and benchmarks and meets with medical providers and leaders monthly to review.Prepares, monitors and manages annual personnel, operating and capital budgets in collaboration with designated senior leader, clinical directors and medical staff.Demonstrates effective problem solving and conflict resolution skills.Communicates budgetary information both to the staff and to direct supervisor.Facilitates and manages change in a creative and positive manner consistent with the organizational direction.Effectively manages all projects and department changes in a creative and positive manner through a proactive process from conception through successfully implementation including planned communication to the appropriate stakeholders.Utilizes available information systems.Ensures consistent, positive customer relations throughout each department.Recommends space and other resources as needed by assigned departments.Participates in selecting outside sources for needed services.Human Resources DevelopmentIn conjunction with medical director facilitates professional growth and development of allied healthcare providers and physicians through identification of needs and provision of educational programs.In conjunction with medical director coordinates programs with the use of internal and external resources that will facilitate and promote professional growth opportunities for the allied healthcare providers and physiciansMaintains an environment that is supportive of physicians and allied health care providers.Strategic PlanningParticipates in strategic planning as requested relative to areas of responsibility.Obtains staff and medical staff input into areas considered for strategic planning and shares information with direct supervisor.Develops operating plan for department that supports the organizational strategic plan.In collaboration with the Emergency Department and Hospital Medicine, communicates organizational and departmental strategic plan to providers and staff.Collaborative RelationshipsAbility to think and act independently, but also works effectively as a member of a team. Works collaboratively with service line leaders, and others to gather feedback/research and execute business operations strategies.Facilitates/participates in the activities of the pertinent medical staff committee(s) in conjunction with the medical directors.Supports multi-disciplinary collaborative practice with other health care disciplines. Promotes collegial relationships based on mutual respect and support.Encourages and participates in joint planning and program development with other health care team members.Participates in multi-disciplinary committees within the organization and the community that focus on patient care issues.Promotes and supports standardization within the organization for like services, including policies, procedures, practices, equipment and supplies.
