Cahaba River Society is seeking a Communications and Community Engagement Manager to join our mission to restore and protect the Cahaba River watershed and the rich diversity of people and wildlife that depend on the Cahaba. This full-time, salaried position will create, implement, and oversee our communications strategy, programs, and events that promote our organization and programs and educate/engage the public to help us achieve our goals. This position reports to the Executive Director, works closely with the Director of Development, and supervises interns and coordinates with contractors.ResponsibilitiesCollaborationMeet regularly with CRS staff and Board to learn about upcoming action opportunities and events. Develop internal and external stories illustrating the Cahaba River Society's mission, culture, and impact. Coordinate mass communications with regular input from CRS staff.Collaborate with 3rd party partners and vendors to implement marketing tactics.Collaborate with cooperating organizations to amplify our messages. Marketing and Communications StrategyDevelop and implement marketing and communications strategies to help the Cahaba River Society accomplish our goals and build an audience across platforms. Develop a plan to tell stories across platforms through text, photography, and video. Current marketing strategies to be coordinated and enhanced include websites, social media, email newsletters, annual impact reports, events, special brochures and publications, membership benefits, and mailers.Develop and oversee annual budgeting for marketing, communications, and events in collaboration with our Director of Development. Develop and oversee Cahaba River Society brand messaging standards and compliance. Plan and manage strategy for utilizing , , and other websites to achieve our marketing and communications objectives.Develop and manage a calendar to coordinate planned communications and program strategies to share engagement opportunities and stories from the field. Work with staff to keep the website current and develop a roadmap for updating materials.Manage analytics and reporting to demonstrate the effectiveness of communication strategies. Each event has a plan to define roles and responsibilities. Collaborate with our Director of Development to enhance and guide overall event strategies to achieve objectives for diverse public engagement and support.Create and implement strategic marketing and communications plans to achieve event objectives, including a focus on engagement with partners in the arts.Serve as Event Communications Lead in support of CRS team members when they serve as Event Coordinators. Public RelationsSupport the Executive Director in their role as the primary spokesperson for our organization. Represent CRS to the media and general public as needed.Craft and manage news media communications, including press releases.Keep up with changes in print, online, and television media.Maintain an up-to-date media contact list and maintain relationships with key media outlets.Collaborate with public relations leads for partner organizations in joint media efforts.TechnologyUtilize a content management system (currently WordPress) to manage content on and . Coordinate with our Director of Development and Administrative Coordinator to utilize our membership database to maximize member communications.Manage email marketing (currently MailChimp)Manage social media platforms and analysis tools. RequirementsBachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, or related field preferred.3+ years of experience in communications or related roles; non-profit experience preferred.Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with others.Strong commitment to environmental conservation and the Cahaba River Society's mission, values, and principles of equity, diversity and inclusion; education or experience in environmental and environmental justice issues is a plus.Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.Proven experience in the planning, promotion, and running of events.Strong skills in project management, time management, multi-tasking, and meeting deadlines.Ability to cultivate strong professional relationships with stakeholders, including staff, board members, volunteers, donors, corporate supporters, and community members.Experience working in and an understanding of the best practices of the main platforms and social media channels, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, etc.Proficient in word processing, spreadsheet and database applications, content management systems, and social media platforms. Experience with fundraising databases and donor management systems is preferred. Ability to work in-office most days, with hybrid remote work a possibility. Occasional weekend and after-hours participation in special events is required (flex time provided).Salary and BenefitsA starting salary of $48,000 - $55,000 is negotiable based on qualifications. CRS pays the full cost of single-rate health insurance (currently $5.9k value). This amount can be applied to the family rate.
