In ensuring the quality of life for the patients in hemodialysis, the Technician shall assist in treatment following established methods and practices of hemodialysis.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:1. Prepares dialysis machine and equipment for patient treatment according to departmental policies and procedures.2. Assembles all necessary supplies and equipment.3. Clean and sterilizes equipment, daily or between patient treatments as directed.4. Stock Hemodialysis Unit with supplies as required. Maintain Storeroom and clean Utility Room in proper order. Alert supervisor when supplies are low.5. Remove and replace malfunctioning machines from patient care area.6. Reports machine malfunctions to Charge Nurse and Clinical Engineering Department.7. Calls repair services of equipment as required. Documents problems in log books (see procedure).8. Attends staff and in-service meetings.9. Reports patient incidents to Charge Nurse.10.Performs other duties as assigned.11.Conducts pre-dialysis patient screening which involves weighing patient and obtaining baseline vital spects and monitors AV accesses and reports problems to assigned registered itiates dialysis on patients with AV accesses only under the supervision of Registered Nurse utilizing established protocols.14.Monitors and documents all observations and changes in patient(s) and machine(s) during treatment. Reports all findings to NurseCharge Nurse.15.Returns blood and discontinues dialysis on patients with AV accesses only utilizing established procedures.16.Ensures a safe and secure environment free of hazards to reduce the risk of injury to all customers. (Patients, visitors and staff.)17.Responsible for checking the RO system in 9D every morning before opening the Hemodialysis unit for treatment and documenting and initiating the following in the daily log book.a) Temperature on blending valve b) Booster pumppre-multimedia filter pressurec) Multimedia filter pressured) Time on multimedia filter and correlate with actual time.e) Carbon filter #1 pressuref) Total chlorine sample from post carbon filter #1g) Carbon filter #2 pressureh) Total Chlorine #2 sample from post carbon filter #2 if breakthrough is noted from carbon filter #1.i) Filter change j) Pre-filter pressurek) Post filter pressurel) Concentrate flowm) Concentrate conductivityn) Primary pressureo) Final pressurep) Permeate water temperatureq) Permeate flowr) Post RO filter pressure18. To notify Clinical engineering, Head Nurse, Medical Directordesignee and Wincross Water Services if abnormal values are noted19. Responsible for reading, recording and initialing the daily log sheet for portable R.O. system (for bedside dialysis) regarding following:a) Water temperatureb) Water pressurec) Change of carbon filterd) Rejection statuse) Chlorine status20. During the Lead Technician's absence:a) Responsible for collecting water samples and dialysate culturesb) Completing the labels and attaching to specimen cups. These specimens are to be placed in specimen refrigerator for collection by Spectra Lab. 21.Continuing education regarding hemodialysis water treatment must be on file for continued placement in the hemodialysis area.22.To comply with policy and procedure manual.Minimum Qualifications1. A High School diploma or a G.E.D; and2. Successful completion of a Hemodialysis Patient Care Technician training course as evident by a valid certificate of completion or equivalent documentation; and3. Certification issued by a national commercially available or state recognized Hemodialysis Patient Care Technician program must be obtained within 18 months of being hired into this title; and4. Completion of an approved facility-based training program in the performance of basic life support procedures including certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation.Special Notes:1. Nationally available certification programs endorsed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Code of Federal Register - 494.140(e), include those of the Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission (NNCC), the Board of Nephrology Examiners Nursing and Technology (BONENT), and the National Nephrology Certification Organization (NNCO).2. An in-house certification andor training program may be administered conducted to assess and develop individuals assigned to this title; however, such internal efforts do not replace the CMS requirement that hemodialysis patient care technicians be nationally or state certified as outlined in 3 above.3. This is a physically demanding position requiring employees to lift, carry, push and pull dialysis machines, related equipment andor supplies which vary in weight and size, as well as stand and walk for extended periods of time. Employees must be able to carry out other physical demands that are essential to the job.4.
