Job DescriptionThe Dean and Director is responsible for implementing the artistic activities of the Dance Division and sets the vision for the Division, led by the values and mission of The Juilliard School. The Dean and Director is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the four-year BFA Dance program, including admitting, educating, training and mentoring 80-90 student dancers at Juilliard; developing and recruiting faculty; programming repertory; commissioning guest artists; curriculum development; and preparing dance students for the transition to the professional world. The Dean and Director identifies needs and realizes initiatives that meet the evolving demands and opportunities of the profession. The role includes curating and implementing a 3-week summer dance intensive for high-school age students designed to promote the BFA program and deepen the recruiting pool for potential talent. Building upon Juilliard's legacy as the nation's first collegiate dance program to provide equal emphasis on classical ballet and modern dance training, the Dean and Director will demonstrate a deep commitment to creating an environment of rigor and aspiration to excellence in all foundational work, bridging to exploration of contemporary forms and choreographic practice. The Dean and Director will continually assess, expand, and refine the curriculum to educate and prepare students for numerous possible career paths including performance, choreography, and interdisciplinary practices. The Dean and Director will develop strong relationships with the other artistic divisions of the school, recognizing the unique opportunity of operating in a multidisciplinary environment, with a particular emphasis on collaborative work with the music division, and educating student dancers to be musically sensitive, focused, and knowledgeable on a level unparalleled in dance conservatory education.The Dean and Director will be committed to creating, overseeing, and championing a community which embraces equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging, building a strong sense of community within the Dance Division and the school overall. The Dean and Director must be a strong advocate for the needs of the Division within the school and beyond, including fundraising and partnerships for the benefit of the program. The Dean and Director is responsible for managing and collaborating with a staff of 7 and a dance faculty of 9 full-time faculty and 20+ adjunct faculty.The Dean and Director reports directly to the President and Provost of The Juilliard School.The salary range for this role is $250,000 - $300,000 per year, commensurate with experience, qualifications, and other relevant considerations. The School is highly selective, admitting 7-8 percent of its applicants annually.Role Responsibilities: Possess exceptional knowledge of and relationships throughout the global dance community, staying informed on and connected to relevant changes in dance education and the professional world Exhibit a deep commitment to the Juilliard values of artistic excellence, creative enterprise and equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging, Prioritize the recruitment and cultivation of dynamic, high-level faculty, staff and students who reflect a diversity of voices and experiences Select diverse repertory and guest artists for season programming, mindfully balancing artistic aspirations with budgetary limitations, and guide artistic teams, including choreographers and creative team members, to produce high-level programs within the resources allocated Oversee curriculum development, ensuring that the curricular programs and activities evolve to meet the shifting demands of the profession In tandem with faculty and staff, determine and uphold the standards and methods by which students are selected for admission to the Division Assess student growth and needs on a consistent basis by teaching, visiting classes, attending performances, and engaging in ongoing faculty meetings and discussions about the students' progress Regularly meet with and advise students in one-on-one and group settings, including monthly Student Representative and Faculty Advisor meetings, semesterly student-faculty conferences, and by ad-hoc student request Understand and promote the overall health and well-being of students, and address the needs of developing young artists with empathy Develop and support interdisciplinary artistic and educational opportunities, in particular through collaboration with Juilliard's Music Division Report to the President and the Provost, and work closely with other departments including Academic Affairs, Public Affairs, Finance, Production, Development, Special Events, Admissions, Financial Aid and Office of Community Engagement Oversee Division staff of 7, a full-time faculty of 9 members, 20+ part-time faculty, 80+ full-time undergraduate students, and numerous guest artists over the course of the academic year; similarly oversee staff, faculty and students of 3-week summer dance intensive program. In collaboration with team members, develop and implement the annual budget for the Division.
