Job Title: Peer Specialist InternJob Summary: The Intense Mobile Treatment (IMT) team is a demonstration project that offers a new flexible treatment and support option. The project is carefully planned, pilot designed to test and evaluate the feasibility and application of an innovative product, approach or technology not currently used by the city. The teams serve individuals who have had recent and frequent contact with mental health, criminal justice, and homeless systems. The program's mobility and flexibility, and its focus on cross systems coordination and patient engagement aim to provide a unique service that can best meet the needs of this transient population. The internship is provided to support a peer trainee participating in the Howie T. Harp Peer Advocacy and Training Center program or a similar peer training program to learn how to deliver peer services. The Peer Specialist Intern provides services within the framework of the core principles of recovery, participant self-determinationchoice, and public safety.Salary: This internship is unpaid and does not offer monetary compensation. However, we may be able to provide documentation or support for academic credit hours, if eligible, through your school. Shift Hours: This internship position is 28 hours and 4 days per week.Location Address: 2090 Adam Clayton Powell Jr Boulevard, New York, NY 10027. Our offices are easily accessible by public transportation.Workplace Flexibility: Flexible - Staff have flexibility to complete their work day from home or another suitable space, typically after reporting to the office andor engaging in field or community-based work.What You Will Be Learning: How to engage participants enrolled in IMT services.How to support and facilitate the transition of youth and adults with mental health problems released from jail into community treatment and supports.How to be trauma-informed and provide trauma-informed services.How to plan and deliver case management and peer support services that address risk factors for criminal recidivism.How and when to use self-disclosure as an intentional strategy to support participant engagement and recovery.How to provide crisis intervention services and know how to intervene during a crisis.Advocacy skills - supporting participants to navigate and access housing, income support, treatment, medical care, civil legal services, self-help and other community services and supports.How to use the SOAR model SSISSDI Outreach, Access, and Recovery model to support homeless clients and those at risk of homelessness successfully receive eligible sources of income.How to empower participants to know their rights and responsibilities and to utilize procedures to ensure their rights are protected.How to use motivational interviewing techniques when providing services.How to address risk factors for criminal recidivism to support participants to achieve recovery goals.How to use recovery principles, deliver recovery-oriented services and use Wellness Recovery Action Planning (WRAP) as a strategy and intervention to support participants to learn how to manage recovery from mental illness and substance use problems.What We Are Looking For:Participant or graduate of a recognized peer specialist training program such as the Howie the Harp Peer Advocacy and Training Center Forensic Peer Specialist Program.High school degree or GED with related work experience.Must be a mental health consumer with a history of involvement in the criminal justice system.Strong knowledge of wellness, recovery and self-help.Effective communication and written skills are essential.Proficiency with computers and databases.Preferred Skills:Fluency in Spanish.Although we would love to learn about the skills of every candidate, only selected candidates that are selected will receive a response.
