The City anticipates hiring three or more officers immediately with additional opening(s) being filled in the following months. The initial hiring process will move very quickly and this expedited hiring process will consist of panel interviews followed by background and standard medical and psychological assessment . The 2024 "Top Patrol" annual salary, including longevity for this position is $105,059 + benefits. Benefits include 100% employer paid medical and dental premiums for single coverage plans in 2024, first year employees earn up to 243 vacation and personal hours and up to 96 hours of sick leave. Lateral transfers are encouraged and will be compensated in accordance with prior qualifying law enforcement experience. All applicants must be currently P.O.S.T. licensed, eligible to be licensed or scheduled to complete a P.O.S.T. approved Skills course by August 31, 2025 and obtain P.O.S.T. eligibility by August 31, 2025. Current City of South St. Paul employees who will be P.O.S.T. eligible by August 31, 2025, may also apply. Candidates must pass a written exercise, oral examination, physical agility testing, physical and psychological examinations, and an extensive background investigation. Click to download the Applicant Checklist.Examples of Duties The Police Officer performs all duties assigned in connection with the operation of the police department (Department). The police officer assists in carrying out the mission of the Department by being responsible for the protection of life and property, the maintenance and restoration of public order, the prevention of crimes, the apprehension of criminals, and the enforcement of laws and ordinances. Duties are performed in accordance with all applicable statutes, rules and regulations and normally consist of patrol, complaint investigation, traffic regulation and personal contacts and service to the public. Officers must be able to act without direct supervision and are responsible for exercising independent judgement in meeting emergency situations.
