The Hartford currently has an in-house opportunity for a Senior Staff Attorney to litigate cases throughout Northern California, mostly in the greater Sacramento area but also in surrounding regions. We are looking for a colleague with significant trial and litigation experience in Premises Liability, Products Liability, Construction Site accidents and Commercial and Personal Automobile accidents. The Senior Staff Attorney will strive to deliver the best possible result in pending litigation. In this position the attorney reports to the Staff Legal Managing Attorney or Assistant Managing Attorney.The Attorney will work remotely, and make appearances in Northern California, mostly in the greater Sacramento area but also in surrounding regions as needed.RESPONSBILITIES:•Handle complex and high exposure litigation.•Analyze intricate substantive and procedural legal and factual issues,conduct extensive, well-reasoned legal research, independently developand present defense strategies on behalf of clients.•Prepare complex pleadings, written discovery, depositions, motions andbriefs in support of defense strategies without supervision because of levelof experience and expertise.•Provide effective and timely communications, information, legal advice andother services to clients and claims customers on legal and factual issuesin a technology driven environment.•Communicate with the court, witnesses, opposing counsel and co-counselin a manner consistent with established office procedures.•Provide for the prompt, efficient and effective disposition of assignedcases.•Independently prepare and present witnesses and evidence at trials,judicial and administrative hearings and alternative dispute resolutions.•Research, draft, file and argue appellate briefs in reviewing courts on behalfof clients•Provide damages and liability opinions to Managing Attorney, AssistantManaging Attorney, staff, clients and claims customers.QUALIFICATIONS:•Juris Doctorate (JD) from accredited law school and license to practice inCalifornia and local federal courts.•Knowledge of California courts with available transportation.•Member in good standing of applicable Bar Association.•7+ years of legal practice experience handling tort defense cases.•Documented first chair jury trialappellate expertise.•Strong legal research and writing skills.•Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize duties and time are amust.•Strong communication, computer and technological skills and the ability toquickly leverage new software as required.•Demonstrated expertise and familiarity in the handling of claim cases pensationThe listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition.
