Compensation Type: HourlyCompensation: $12.00Job SummaryPurpose of Position:Social Peer Assistants serve to support and encourage student success amongst the new student scholars in the Weiler Scholars (WSP) Scholars Program. Social Peer Assistants will be assigned scholars and connect weekly with them to help increase in them a sense of belonging and feel connected to the college. Through one-on-one and small group interactions, Social Peer Assistants will be knowledgeable guides for students and thoughtful facilitators who will provide access to the campus community, campus resources, and ultimately serve as a role model and advocate.This position is open to students with or without Federal Work Study eligibility. Duties and Responsibilities:To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential duty listed below. Attend WSP programmingAttend staff meetingsServe as a positive role modelInforms students about ways to engage in campuscollege life.Conducts outreach activities to promote resources and opportunities for support. Completes other projects to help with student success and retention, including outbound calling to students to connect them to support services.Educates students regarding college processes and services, effective communication, and other tips and tools for academic successIncreasing awareness of the Weiler Scholars Program at Columbus StatePerform other duties as assignedKnowledge, Skills and Abilities:Knowledge of: Columbus State campus, programs, services, and opportunities for student engagement. Must be interested in learning about college and community resources for referrals. Skill in: Weiler Scholars Peer Asstants need to possess strong leadership abilities, active listening and communication skills, an aptitude for problem solving, comfort with public speaking, and the motivation to learn and help others in the Columbus State community.Ability to: Operate a computer (including fundamental understanding of Microsoft Office). Must be able to navigate Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Maintain confidentiality.MinimumGeneral Qualifications:This position requires that any applicant be enrolled as a current student at Columbus State in three or more credit hours in a degree or certificate seeking program. Visit for a full explanation of eligibility requirements for student employment at Columbus State.ORThis position requires applicants to have Federal Work Study as part of their current Financial Aid package with Columbus State. You must also be enrolled in SIX or more credit hours in a degree or certificate program. Any applicants without Federal Work Study eligibility will not be considered for this position.Applicants must have received a high school diploma or a certificate of attendance from an accredited secondary school or a certificate of high school equivalence and be exempt from Ohio Revised Code Chapter 4109.Must have reliable transportation or other means to get to work regularly.Students enrolled as Transient, College Credit Plus, Undecided, or otherwise non-degree-seeking are not considered eligible for Student Employment.Schedule: TBD by the needs of department and student schedule between office hours of Monday-Friday 10:00am-4:00pm.Must be able to commit a minimum of 2 hours per week. Maximum 20 hours per week.Work will be performed: On-site only.PathwaysMajors that may be interested in this position:Open to students of all majors and programs.Position Specific Qualifications:Demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills.Have a genuine desire to help their peers succeed.Demonstrate leadership potential.Be self-motivated with a positive attitude.Display a willingness to learn about different cultures.Preferred Qualifications:Current or pervious Weiler Scholars will be given priority.Successfully completed COLS 1100 (First Year Experience Seminar) or COLS 1101 (College Success Skills) course.GPA of 2.5 or above.Be a second year student.Successfully completed at least one recent (within the last 2 years) semester at Columbus State main campus.Professional Development Students employed by Columbus State are exposed to professional work environments where they develop many of the important transferable skills necessary for future success in the workforce. All student employees and their functional supervisors participate in this program during Autumn and Spring semesters.Career and Leadership Development Program (CLDP)The program consists of paid competency-based career and leadership development activities designed by Career Services.
